Bitcoin, one of the original digital currencies, has a week in flux.

When growing up, “money” was always linked to a physical piece of green paper with an old man on it. Over the past few years, it seems that definition of money is shifting. With the rise of digital currencies, everyone from the common man to a trader on Wall Street is being forced to rethink how money and value are conceptualized in modern society.

What is a "Bitcoin"?

The most popular (and the original) form of digital currency is Bitcoin. Traded primarily on the website Coinbase, Bitcoin has value simply because of the current demand from the public. Unlike gold, valued because it can be traded, molded, and used physically, Bitcoin has value simply because people are interested in it and assign a trivial value to the currency. Although it’s not widely accepted at most retailers, the currency is certainly catching the eye of investors wanting to ride Bitcoin to the top as its value continues to rise… or so it seems.

This week, Bitcoin reached a value of over $11,000, making it the most valuable digital currency available. Shortly after hitting its peak, the value of the currency plummeted before recovering to roughly $10,000. It’s in this fluctuation that the risk of Bitcoin is seen: it may be a highly rewarding currency to get involved with, but it’s also highly risky.

Released on the 1976 album Fly Like an Eagle, “Take the Money and Run” tells the story of Billy Joe and Bobby Sue. These “two young lovers with nothin’ better to do” found themselves in the midst of a robbery. Instead of dropping everything and running for their lives, the pair separated and escapes, reuniting to “take the money and run”.

Over the past week, traders around the world have been trying their best to jump on the bandwagon and make money off of Bitcoin. As with all trading, the key is finding the time to “sell, sell, sell!” It may not be like the robbery committed by Billy Joe and Bobby Sue, but the uncertain fluctuations of Bitcoin value this week are a clear sign that investors should “take the money and run”.
