Development of the Character

The first picture is Piko-Taro, and the second picture is Kosaka Daimaou.

Piko-Taro is not real. He’s a character created by comedian and DJ Kosaka Daimaou (real name: Kazuhiko Kosaka). Piko-Tara was first introduced in live, stand-up performances. Daimaou then decided to develop this character further by creating Piko-taro’s first YouTube video: PPAY. This video had almost 2.5 million views on YouTube. Piko-Taro has since created several other videos that have the same structure, such as the white backdrop, simple dance track and moves and nonsensical lyrics. Each of them is funny videos, but some of them contain Japanese humor, which other countries might not understand. He also creates a twitter account for his character Piko Taro’s and people can follow him either on YouTube or Twitter.

Development of the Song

Piko-Taro dresses up in a yellow and jungle silk costume in the original version of the song. He is dancing first with a pen, then with an apple (apple pen) and later a pen and the pineapple (pineapple-pen) and sing the whole pineapple pen lyrics. Although this is a strange dance song video, it is damn attractive.

Daimaou came up this jingle when he was eating fruit one day and then by using this idea, he made the entire song himself on his computer (BuzzFeed News). “It was totally unexpected,” he said. “The way it spread rapidly around the world made me realize for the first time that I was singing in English. I was so happy that my height increased by three inches” (BuzzFeed News).

The reason why is because it has every ingredient to compose a viral YouTube video. It has a simple but catchy track, a simple funny dance routine, the nonsensical lyrics and the entire hilarious environment create a unique style to attract audiences. It went popular because its catchy tune, silly and repetitive lyrics will stick in your head all day which makes this become a "brainwash" song.
