"The One" Just Dropped On Netflix – Here Are 17 Things I Learned In The First Episode

What if you could find your soulmate via a DNA match?

Netflix just dropped its latest original series, The One, on Friday 12th March. The sci-fi drama is set in London, and follows the creators of a revolutionary dating app called "The One", which matches users up based on their DNA. Here's what we learned watching the first episode!

🚨 This post contains major spoilers for The One. Proceed with caution! 🚨

    1. The app "The One" was created by scientists Rebecca Webb – played by Betrayal star Hannah Ware – and James Whiting, played by Grange Hill alumnus Dimitri Leonidas.

    2. Rebecca had the idea for a dating app based on DNA matching after reading a research paper by James on the biological behaviour of fire ants.

    3. Before inventing the app, Rebecca was broke and living with her friend Ben Naser, played by Amir El-Masry.

    4. Rebecca herself has been matched with a guy called Ethan, played by Wilf Scolding.

    5. The One has become an online sensation, with over 10 million people having been matched. But some are suspicious of the ethics behind the company's DNA-based algorithm.

    6. As it turns out, these suspicions may be well-placed, as the company is hinted to have a chequered past.

    7. The Government is also suspicious of The One, which is seemingly causing divorce rates in the UK to spike.

    8. Luckily, Rebecca is straight onto any bad PR, and manages to meet with an MP and threaten her not to enact any legislation that would compromise The One. Way to do business, Rebecca!

    9. Meanwhile, police officers Kate Saunders and Nick Gedny are investigating a body found in the River Thames, which has been there for around a year.

    10. Ben is revealed in flashbacks to be a mutual friend of Rebecca and James's.

    11. Kate and Nick confirm that the body pulled from the Thames is Ben, and go to interview Rebecca, who is super cagey about the whole thing.

    12. In her personal life, Kate has been using The One and has been matched with a Barcelona based woman named Sophia.

    13. Sophia arranges to come to London and meet Kate, but she stands her up on their first date. Later, Kate discovers Sophia was hit by a car on the way to meet her.

    14. We also meet married couple Hannah and Mark Bailey. Even though they are seemingly happy, Hannah is worried that Mark's ideal match is still out there, and so she takes steps to match Mark in secret using his DNA.

    15. Rebecca mentions that her parents hate each other, but have never split up.

    16. It's later revealed that Ben may have been dead before his body went in the Thames.

    17. And finally, in light of Ben's death, Rebecca is worried about protecting her partner Ethan from something bad happening. But the real question is – what happened between Rebecca, James, and Ben, and is the past about to catch up to her?
