What's A Book Scene That Was So Dark You Almost Couldn't Finish It?

Was reading The Red Wedding worse than watching it?

We've all been nose deep in a book before, and then, out nowhere, the scariest/grossest/saddest/most stressful scene comes along to shake us up.

What we want to know is – can you remember a scene from a book that you struggled to get through because it was so traumatic? TW: this could get dark, and watch out for spoilers!

Perhaps you were scared out of your wits reading the scene in Stephen King's It when Georgie is attacked by Pennywise the clown?

Or maybe you just HAD to put down A Storm of Swords after reading that Red Wedding chapter?

Or maybe the harrowing scene in the woodshed in Toni Morrison's Beloved, in which Sethe would rather kill her children than send them back to slavery, just broke you beyond belief.
