Science Fiction's Power

The book Chasing Our Science Fiction Future written by Dr. Daniel Wilson, provides research into the influential power of science fiction. Dr. Wilson, discovered that engineers draw inspiration from what they find in science fiction. In other words, making science fiction, science fact! An example provided in his book is Honda's AI robot being inspired by the fictional Astroboy. Therefore, science fiction is capable of influencing and predicting the future.

Mark Zuckerberg's AI Inspired By Iron Man

According to “Mark Zuckerberg created Iron Man’s Jarvis in his spare time” Mark Zuckerberg’s goal was to construct his own real life version of the JARVIS AI system shown in the movie Iron Man. Similar to Tony Stark’s fictional JARVIS, Mark Zuckerberg’s Jarvis AI is able to control many of the appliances in his home. Some of which include, his home's lighting, temperature, music and can even open the doors for guests. In fact, Mark Zuckerberg even named his creation, Jarvis AI, after the fictional JARVIS. Needless to say, Mark Zuckerberg claims to have received inspiration from the fictional JARVIS. Best part is Zuckerberg simply texts his household JARVIS AI system whenever he needs something.

Anki’s main purpose for creating Cozmo is to "bring a character to life which you would normally only see in movies" (Stat, “Aniki”). Cozmo is an small AI robot that can recognize people’s faces and make eye contact with them. Anki did not program Cozmo to do anything practical. Instead, Anki focused on giving Cozmo a friendly personality that people can interact with. Therefore, Cozmo is friendly AI system with it’s sole inspiration from the character WALL-E. Specifically, Cozmo was inspired by WALL-E's personality.

IBM is Striving For Efficient Automation

IBM’s goal with Watson is to mitigate redundant and routine tasks for human workers. IBM believes AI of the future will be highly skilled at a single task. IBM states AI will be able to clean, drive automobiles, place orders, and sort through vast amounts of research data faster than people are capable of. However, IBM does not believe AI will be capable of completing several tasks. For example, an AI system built for cleaning will not be good at driving and vice versa.

The movie WALL-E, is The Future of AI

IBM and AI engineers believe that AI of the future will be highly efficient at one task. Therefore AI will not skilled at multitasking. Also, the AI engineers have shown that their AI systems are friendly towards people. Thus, based on this, AI in the future will be an efficient worker enabling people to focus on more pressing matters. Additionally, AI and people in the future will have a positive relationship with one another. Fortunately, this future does not relate to the AI portrayed in The Terminator. This future closely relates to the fictional future portrayed in the movie WALL-E. The movie WALL-E is science fiction's closest portrayal of the AI in the future. This is the case because the AI systems in WALL-E are all highly efficient at a single task.
