The Largemouth Bass is a large elongated fish with a dark usually greenish coloring with a light colored belly. Bass are known for their jolting strikes and fierce fighting when being caught. It is a popular game fish often fished in contests of the pro fishing circuit. Similar to the Smallmouth Bass these two are often mistaken for each other. Crappie are one of Minnesota's most popular fish. Often considered a "panfish" it is in the sunfish family. They can be identified by their large rounded dorsal fins and their deep but narrow bodies. The Yellow Perch is one of the most popular and easily caught fish in Minnesota. They are easily identified by their yellow-golden coloration on their sides. Their easy to catch nature and overall taste make them very popular throughout the state. The Burbot or Eelpout is a long, slender, smooth skin. It resembles both a catfish and an eel having a single whisker under it's chin. Due to its slimy skin and tendency to wrap itself around you it is known to many as the "ish" fish. The Muskellunge or "Musky" is the largest fish in the pike family and one of the largest fish in Minnesota. While very elusive the musky wait in weed beds to lunge out and latch onto their prey. Sometimes called the "Bronzeback" for its brassy coloration the smallmouth bass is one of the strongest fish for its size. They are abundant in southeast rivers, central lakes, and northern lakes of Minnesota. Along with the Brown Trout the Rainbow Trout was introduced to Minnesota in the 1800's. It is native to the western united states and is one of many trout species. The Rainbow Trout is an elongated fish with coloration that fades from green near the dorsal fin to a white or yellow near its belly.
