    Touchdown Zone Lights

Touchdown Zone Lights (TDZL) is another example of lights providing additional support for a pilot and not every airport has them. They are to be found at category II and II precise-approach runways.

Thanks to these lights, a pilot can identify the touch down zone while landing – both at night and during bad weather conditions (heavy rain, fog). Such lights are constant and red. They consist of a light bars system placed every 30 or 60 meters along the runway centerline, perpendicularly. They start 30 meters from a threshold and go to the middle of a runway or up to 900 meters – it depends on which distance is shorter. TDLZ provide good visibility of the touchdown zone. Their type and installation are regulated by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), Annex 14, Volume I “Aerodrome design and operations”.
