    Runway lighting

Are an airstrip and runway the same things? Which lights belong to a runway and what are additional lights supporting a pilot during landing and take-off operations?

Before we go into details – runway lighting- to be clear, should be defined first. A runway is the most important part of an airport landing area. It is designated for both landing and taking off. Its surface is usually made of concrete, asphalt or both of these. Minor airports can be equipped with a runway of natural surface, grassy or gravel. An airstrip includes a runway and also the terrains next to it – at the sides and at the end. This “backup” area serves security measures. Let’s move on to the second question asked at the beginning. What lights belong to a runway? All the runways are equipped with edge lights, threshold lights and runway end identifier lights. Runway centerline lights and Touch Down zone lights constitute an additional help for a pilot landing during bad weather conditions.
