Police Charge 21-Year-Old Man With Murder After Imam's Death

UPDATE: A 21-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder, and Mohammed Hussain Syeedy, also 21, has been charged with murder.

A man has been charged with murder following the death of a Rochdale imam.

Jalal Uddin, 64, was found with serious head injuries in a playground in Wardleworth, Rochdale, on 18 February.

Uddin, understood to be an imam at nearby Jalalia Jamé mosque in Trafalgar Street, later died from his injuries in hospital.

Mohammed Hussain Syeedy, 21, of Ramsay Street, Rochdale, was charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder on 25 February. He appeared at Manchester crown court on 1 March for a preliminary hearing.

A 17-year-old boy arrested by Greater Manchester police on suspicion of murder at a home in Ramsay Street last week remains on bail until 20 April. Officers also seized a Vauxhall Astra.

Uddin, originally from Bangladesh, is understood to have been on his way home following a meal with friends when he was assaulted shortly before 9pm.

His son paid tribute in a statement, saying his father was a "loved and integral part of the community".

"He was a soft spoken, gentle soul who wouldn't hesitate to help those in need. He was a simple man, but respected by all for his kind and caring nature," he continued. Uddin will be "dearly missed by not only his wife, children and his young grandchildren, but by all who knew him".

Describing events on the night of 18 February as "incredibly inhumane", he added: "We are mortified that such a horrific attack took place with such an innocent and polite soul."

A 31-year-old man who was arrested on 20 February has been released without charge. Officers said he had been "completely eliminated" from inquiries.
