Thousands Of People Will Hold Street Parties To Remember MP Jo Cox

The 41-year-old MP was murdered outside her constituency office in June last year.

The British MP who was murdered last year by a far-right extremist will be remembered across the UK this summer when thousands hold street parties.

The "Great Get Together" will consist of street parties, picnics, and baking competitions held over 17 and 18 June to mark the anniversary of 41-year-old Jo Cox's murder.

Cox, a mum to two children and MP for Batley and Spen, was murdered by Thomas Mair outside her constituency office on 16 June last year. Witnesses said Mair shouted "Britain First!" as he shot and killed her.

Her widower, Brendan Cox, said in a statement that the Great Get Together would be the perfect way to remember his wife.

"Jo wanted a chance to bring our communities together to celebrate what unites us," he said. "There could be no more fitting tribute to her memory."

Cox, speaking to BBC Radio 2, said his wife's murder was "a political thing designed to divide our country and split communities apart.

"As a reaction to that event, [we will] bring the country together en masse."

Several charities – among them the British Red Cross, Mumsnet, Stonewall, Hope Not Hate, Amnesty International, Oxfam, Save the Children, and the NSPCC – are supporting the initiative, which will be announced later today by the Duchess of Cornwall at Clarence House, London.

Also pledging his support is celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who said the "awesome initiative" would help to connect people to "the best things in life – it breaks down barriers, and gets people talking and sharing".

The Big Lunch initiative, founded in 2009, will combine with the Jo Cox foundation to publicise the event, which is modelled partly on the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012, when roughly 8 million people took part in street parties and picnics.

Peter Stewart, of The Big Lunch, said: "Like Jo, we believe in togetherness and achieving a sense of community, collaboration and fun."
