Rome is a beautiful destination at any time in the year and its summer is particularly popular within tourists. Winter is a time for smaller crowds: there are less people and the best part? More peace and quiet. Something that is much cherished in any famous holiday destination such as Rome, London or Paris.

Though not the most important reason – who are we kidding? Of course it’s important! Winter holidays offer cheaper flights, cheaper hotel rooms and so forth. This is precisely due to the lack of tourists traveling during those months. And just like any other popular European city, this is a very good news, since they are usually much more expensive than regular destinations.

Rome is known for its beauty, but also for its chaotic crowd. Thanks to the fact that most tourists have visited Rome during summer, you will no longer look like cattle in a line when you are visiting the Colosseum or the Sistine Chapel. No more three hour waiting to see any of the beautiful attractions in Rome.

Though we do appreciate the sun most of the times, Rome can be really hot, especially for people who come from cooler weathers. And what’s the best thing of the winter? The cold is just right: not too hot, not too cold. The highest temperature usually reaches 15°C (59°F) top and hits 4°C (39°F) the lowest. Well we wouldn’t recommend to go and swim, but you can definitely stroll around the city without getting dehydrated.

People who have gone to The Vatican before will agree with me on this: it’s just too crowded to actually enjoy its main monuments and museums. However, during the winter the visit can get pretty smooth. It will not be crowded at all and most of the times you’ll find a cloudy sky, which sets the perfect mood to visit holy places. And if you miss the sun, don’t worry: chances are you will get to see a perfectly normal sunny day in the middle of the winter.

Rome is not all history: there is an active night life, great amusements for children, art, comedy shows…but most importantly, there is authentic and glorious food. Italian food is the best and Romans know their tricks. The best part is that seasonal winter gastronomy is even better than your regular pasta and pizza. You can find many other types of dishes, like artichokes, in many presentations.

Many people agree that Rome is paradoxically cozier in winter than during summer. Think about it: you come from a long stroll around town and you find a warm trattoria, a regular bar, a café or restaurant... Just as good as getting under the blankets during a rainy day! Also you get an extra excuse to drink wine or coffee and eat chunky, hearty food. Doesn’t get any better than that.

Do we really need to say more? Ice skating is a great activity for kids and grownups during the winter. If you are going for the holidays with your loved ones, you will surely enjoy skating and falling down multiple times like a professional.

In fact, you will enjoy plenty of the seasonal markets around the town, especially in Piazza Navona. So everything from clothes to crafted items will be at your disposition during the holiday.
