Here's How To Make Moving Easier On Your Kids

As with many things in life, it’s ALL about the delivery. Moving might be the biggest change your kids have ever experienced, so get them amped to start a new chapter and, like their favorite storybook or TV explorers, discover the unknown. Just don’t promise there’s buried treasure in the backyard unless you’re going to put it there! ;)

Don't drag them along if they're not interested. If they are, however, make them feel involved and special by giving them a job. Designate them "official open house photographer" or provide them a list of questions to ask the real estate agent while you listen and chime in!

Your kids can't control a whole lot about the move, so let them have some fun with what they can have a say in. You might not be able to give them a bed inside a pirate ship, but you could make some sort of nautical theme happen!

Letting your kids explore and have fun at parks, playgrounds, museums, and restaurants in potential new 'hoods will lessen the disappointment of having to leave old haunts behind. Who doesn't love a new playground?!

Have your kids make colorful labels and decorate boxes with markers and stickers. You could also grab some white T-shirts and let them get creative designing something special to wear on moving day!

Of course you don't want to just feed your kids sugar all day or they'll majorly crash! Some healthy moving-day snacks for cheerful and energetic little helpers include crackers and cheese, celery and apples with peanut butter, and hummus.

Whether it's DJ'ing the moving day tunes, making sure each room is fully cleared out, or entertaining the cat or dog, give your kids a specific role that will keep them occupied, make them feel important, AND help you out, even if it's just in a small way.

Yes, they'll have to get used to sleeping in their new bedroom sooner rather than later. But that first night is a huge transition, so let them have a fun sleepover with their siblings (or you, if you're down to sleep on the floor after a day of moving!) so they don't feel scared or lonely in a new setting.

No matter how much you want your kitchen set up, stat, don't make your kids wait to have their sources of entertainment and comfort back. You'll appreciate them being able to play or snuggle with their stuffed animals while you embark on the rest of the unpacking process.

To ward off homesickness, make the same Sunday morning pancakes you did in your old home, have the same movie and game nights, and maintain bedtime rituals (after the first night sleepover, that is). Once you've settled in, it will be time to start some new traditions, too. ;)
