Narcissism Or Self- Love? MY #OOTD Instagram Experiment

I uploaded daily picture of myself for a week to Instagram and the end result was surprising.

Let me start this by saying that I always saw excessive Instagram posting as incredibly obnoxious.

I'm not talking about the cute posts with your S.O. or happy life updates - I'm talking about the myspace status mirror selfies we all have taken.

For a week I put my reservations aside and posted daily pictures of my outfits. My only rule was that I needed to post my picture first thing in the morning.

On the first day I felt INCREDIBLY self-conscious. This was a random AF experiment, and I was just hoping my followers wouldn't be silently judging me.

As the week went on, though, something unexpected happened.

I am not a morning person. But doing this experiment actually made me excited to get up in the morning.

I usually have to set my alarm 30 minutes before I actually get up because I LITERALLY spend 30 minutes just laying in bed dreading the thought of parting with my bed.

Not only was I enjoying getting up, but I was also feeling more confident.

And this was NOT because of any of the likes or comments I was getting. But simply because I felt I was taking care of myself and dressing how I wanted to feel.

I wanted to feel beautiful, and empowered and ready to take on the world.

And believe it or not folks - I did. No one could tell me that I wasn't going to get the job done today!

Scientists call the process by which clothing effects our cognitive process “enclothed cognition”

A study published in The Journal of Experimental Social Psychology by Northwestern University's Adam Hajo and Adam D. Galinsky showed that when students were asked to wear lab coats and told they were doctor's coats rather than painter' coats, the student's who believed they were wearing doctor's coats did better on a series of test as compared to those that were wearing a painters coat - even though it was the same clothing.

While my experiment is over and I most definitely spent my Memorial Day Monday in my jammies it's nice to know that the way I dress has an effect on my mental attitude.

The act of looking nice is an act of self-care for me, and having this knowledge will be in my arsenal for those days when I find it hard to get out of bed.

And while I may not be posting daily #OOTD I have gained more respect for people who do post random selfies and outfit posts.

If you want to post that fierce look, you post that fierce look! If you're feeling yourself REVEL IN IT! Life's to short to care about the haters.
