Why Do Humans Cosplay Or Role-Play On Halloween And/or Elsewhere?

Last week's Defiance Season 2 Episode 7 inspired viewers like me to think about the many reasons why humans cosplay or role-play on Halloween and/or elsewhere. Viceroy Berto Mercado donned an "alien" Castithan costume remarking that "it's in our nature to want to be other than we are, it's what makes humanity great... Never be ashamed of trying to be better than who you are and cherish the moments you get to spend in a place like this. You can be anything you want here". While Christie McCawley, a human whom is married to a Castithan named Alak Tarr, took an almost Masquerade Ball approach when asked if she recognized Viceroy Mercado with "No, isn't that the point of coming to these things?". In /r/AskReddit, I got a few responses like "It's fun to engage in fiction because our reality is so horrible and dull" and "Same reason people paint themselves up forr sportsball games. Its fun.". http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/2cg9c4/why_do_humans_cosplayroleplay_something_alien/ So in addition to having fun, showing your support at an event like sports or San Diego Comic-Con, being someone else that we admire or reinventing our identity even if for a moment, here are some reasons that I thought of particularly as an MMORPG player where "Role-Playing" is an essential part of the game: to create and enact a story for their character where speaking as oneself means to be "out of character", to learn by mimicing, to amuse/entertain others by acting, and maybe to make our fantasies real. Were any of your reasons mentioned? Do you have any to add?

Moving from the communal couch to the solitary yet worldwide PC

The internet is like having every single newspaper, magazine and movie in addition to radio and television station in the world on your computer. Many people also search the internet to get their information and entertainment from reading or watching Social Generated Media and Consumer Generated Media. Twitter (www.twitter.com) is an incredibly powerful place for people to interact instantly online with the cast, crew and community of cable shows like SyFy's Defiance (www.defiance.com). This is evident by doing a search of #Defiance every Thursday for humorous, insightful and informative live-tweeting while everyone watches the show (warning: may contain spoilers for those of us on the West Coast, but is still really entertaining to hear the many perspectives told through New Media while also being entertained by what we consider Old Media as if all of the viewers are in the same room sitting around the same screen). User Generated Content may also be found daily through events like a Sunday podcast with Castithan and Irathient (in addition to Dothraki and Valyrian for Game of Thrones fans) language creator David J. Peterson @Dedalvs (http://about.me/davidjpeterson) and Barry @thebotanophile on @defiancepodcast MMOReporter's Twitch channel (http://mmoreporter.com/live/) where viewers are able to chat with the hosts and guests through the livestream. Twitch (www.twitch.com) is where gamers may also spectate video game tournaments like those that we host in Rift MMORPG PvP dimensions (http://www.riftgame.com) on Grim Gamer TV (http://www.twitch.tv/grimgamertv) on Saturdays at 6:30 PM PST or on YouTube recorded videos, seeing content creation entirely by a community: competitors, bloggers, donors, livestream commentators and viewers as well as hosts. Subscriptions and donations remain a good way to show your support in the form of compensation for content creators.

Awesome player-created reproductions in Rift dimensions

Rift is a FTP (Free To Play) MMORPG (Massively Mutliplayer Online Role-Playing Game) that successfully mixes fantasy and science fiction from Trion Worlds, Inc. One of the many things a player can do in this video game is to create a 3-D “dimension” and visit guild and other player’s dimensions. If you are able to download Rift and log on, then you can jump right in at level 1 and see all the public dimensions for yourself. Dimensions are an incredible way for gamers to express their creativity in a static space. The only movement you will find in a dimension is from an immobile item such as fire, water, windy pines, “falling green motes” or elevators. For this reason, dimensions alone are only able to tell a scene but not an entire story especially like one that you would find in a motion picture or a book. Instead, players create or recreate settings, scenes, landscapes, still lifes, or a captured moment in time much like a photograph; some of which occur in Telara (the world in which Rift takes place) and others more like something that you would see somewhere IRL (In Real Life). Lore is the background story of a game. It tells the player the history, stories or myths of the past. Some dimensions also incorporate lore and suggest alternative scenarios. Mood is also present in dimensions with lighting effects and music. The only limitations really are the player’s creativity and the availability of dimension items and locations. Exploring a dimension whether guided (written or visually) or unguided gives the community a glimpse into their creator’s IRL personality – undeniably their intelligence and often their fantasies or interests, when we are often unable to meet their online character first. Sometimes they are spectacular places that inspire and awe, as well as gather like-minded individuals (which is a very important aspect of MMORPG’s) for interactive events whether RP (Role Playing) or recently with PvP (Player versus Player).
