The 7 Wonders Of The Not-So-Ancient Cold Brew

An alternative method of brewing and consuming coffee is growing rapidly thanks to a bundle of attractive qualities.

Cold brew is becoming ever more popular. Nationwide coffee giant, Starbucks, added it to their expansive menu in 2015, according to the timeline on their website. Dunkin' Donuts followed suit last July. Thousands of cafes across the country are doing cold brew, and DIY-ers have already begun posted tutorials online on how to make it at home. Here are 7 reasons why you should make your next cup of coffee a cold brew.

    1. Higher amounts of caffeine

You are able to drink significantly less to obtain the same amount of caffeine as a normal hot or iced coffee, which is great if you're tired of ordering large iced coffees or more expensive americanos or lattes for the caffeine content.

    2. Smoother

Since cold brew is brewed in a fashion that never exposes it to hot water, the acidity is much lower than your standard coffee, making it helpful for people with GERD or chronic heartburn.

    3. It's less bitter!

Along the same lines as 'smoother', but with a distinction. Coffee is inherently a bitter flavor, so a little bitterness is an inevitability. However, cold brew brings that bitterness down quite a bit. Those who normally need sugar in their coffee might do away with it in favor of the natural sweetness that is brought out in the cold brewing process. Similarly, regular coffee's aftertaste can be quite unwelcoming thanks to its bitter acidity. Say too-da-loo to coffee breath!

    4. It's easy (and cheap) to make

It is very simple to make homemade cold brew. All you need is some fresh, coarsely ground coffee beans, coffee filters, and a French press or empty 2 liter bottle. It almost literally makes itself. Though you could always put on a pot of coffee, throw it in the fridge and dump it over some ice, chances are you'd be underwhelmed with the outcome. Cold brew is easy to do right and is delicious without fail!

    5. Bolder, richer taste

Cold brew has a very strong, distinct flavor. Most cold brews have clear notes of chocolate and nuts, though some can be fruity, depending on the bean. It also pairs well with every dairy product or dairy substitute. Pick your poison!

    6. The strength is very customizable

Since cold brew is usually made and sold in concentration, it is up to you to decide how much water you cut it with. If you choose no water at all, you're in for a fun ride!

    7. Nitro cold brew

An even newer phenomenon is infusing cold brew with nitrogen. This creates a magnificent, magical being known as nitro cold brew. The nitrogen infusion causes the coffee to have a frothy head, very similar to a stout beer. The resulting product is smooth, creamy, and sweet, all without any additives. It is truly unlike any coffee before it.
