According to the [NC Rural Center](https://www.ncruralcenter.org/about-us/), 80 NC counties are classified as rural, 6 are classified as urban, and 14 are classified as suburban.

How many rural counties exist in North Carolina?  


NC's large urban centers have more residents born out-of-state. A majority of rural counties, however, have populations with a large percentage of people who were born in the state. Some rural counties deviate from the trend; Clay, Currituck, and Onslow counties all have a greater percentage of people not born in the state than urban counties like Wake and Mecklenburg.
