Shaved Ice! Wait.....WHAT?!

RE: BUZZFEED FOOD APPLICATION --This dessert is basically a lot of shavings of ice and crushed ice with sweet treats all around. What’s even better is the sweet syrups that is poured all over the dessert. Regularly, the syrup is added after the ice is shaved or crushed, but not always. This dessert is normally shared between a few friends. In no form should this be eaten alone, unless you’re trying to full a craving!

Shaved Ice is considered a dessert that many know and love today all around the world. Most sources indicate that it was originally started in the town of Yokohama in Japan, 1869. Since it was so popular, by 1920s, it seemed to be a common dessert all around Japan. Many people try to claim that Taiwan, Hawaii or Korea actually started this trend. In my opinion, I see that an idea was started and everyone put their own twist on it to satisfy their customs.

As a New Yorker who has worked in a full on Chinese café can tell you that it’s pretty tasty. The way we created it was with a machine that fully crushed ice. We had options of fully shaved ice which is like a powder texture or we can a thicker substance. We normally went with the fully shaven ice just because it seems easier to eat as the flavors are all absorbed. After we put the shaven ice in a round clear plastic bowl, we ask the customer what toppings they’d like. We had many things to choose, from freshly cut fruits to tasty everyday treats. Some even top this bad boy off with a scoop of ice-cream! As summer came, the business started blooming due to the popularity of this dessert. We allowed about 3 topping per cup. Afterwards, we would put our mixture of condensed milk with a tad of regular milk for it to be sweet. Then we had brown sugar in a syrup form that was lightly drizzled on top as well.

When shaved ice is mentioned, a lot of people would only picture a snow cone. However, this new twist is actually quite satisfying. I’d actually like to travel to other countries to try the different types of shaved ice desserts they offer!

I do hope that I opened your eyes to another tasty dessert. It’s so typical of me to mention summer time treats during the winter. My whole idea is not to tease you but to prepare you for what you should be consuming when summer time does arrive! Take a lot of pictures because they create great memories! Treat your stomach, have some sweats once in a while!
