10 Places With Awesome Summer Solstice Celebrations

1. The Mountains between Germany and Austria

Every year during the sumer solstice, thousands of fires burn on and around the Mieminger mountain range, the Ehrwald basin, and Mount Zugspitze. The symbols in the fire change every year. Locals choose what will be depicted, but they're kept secret until the fire begins to burn.

2. New York, New York

Thousands of people have come to celebrate the summer solstice in Times Square. Crowds gather and stretch in massive yoga classes, starting at 5:30 a.m.

3. Gijón, Spain

People meet on the beaches on the night of the San Juan bonfires. In Spain, the summer solstice is also considered a day of cleansing, as the locals burn "old school books, wood, and effigies of malign spirits."

4. Stonehenge, England

Over 20,000 people are expected to show up and celebrate the summer solstice at Stonehenge this year. The 5,000-year-old structure draws the likes of druids, pagans, and all sorts of other revelers from all over the globe.

5. Kumanovo, Republic of Macedonia

Kokino is a 3,800-year-old megalithic observatory that was discovered in 2001. Locals assemble there, as it was used to mark the position of the sun in solstice in the past. There's even a "stone block with a marking on the upper platform" that "marks the direction of sunrise on summer solstice when viewed from one of the seats."

6. Isla del Sol, Bolivia

Summer solstice ceremonies on the Isla del Sol are led by Aymara indigenous spiritual guides. They're usually led by one man and one woman who represent the duality in life, as they believe that everything has a male and female part.

The Kielder Observatory is located in the far-off Kielder forest in England. Nature lovers are welcome to slip on a pair of solar viewing glasses and look through heavy-duty telescopes to watch the sun rise at the observatory.

The folks of Belarus celebrate with songs, dancing, and campfires during Ivan Kupala Day. Many traditions are still revered today, including one in which people jump over bonfires. The person who jumps the highest is said to be the luckiest!

9. Poznań, Poland

Just like in Spain, St. John's Night is also celebrated in Poland. In 2012, 15,000 candle-lit paper lanterns were released into the sky — breaking a world record — in celebration of the shortest night of the year.

The Fremont Solstice Parade in Seattle offers people a "free-spirited solstice weekend." There are tons of exciting activities, from live music and a dog parade to a craft fair!
