    Chancellor Dubois’s Lion’s Den

UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois assumes the role of white savior...once again.

Black UNC Charlotte: “Save us Chancellor Dubois!” Chancellor Dubois: “I don’t know.”

On Wednesday, Sept. 27, an awfully distasteful picture was discovered and reposted on Snapchat. The image showed a sign that read “COLORED” placed over a drinking fountain in what looked like a residential hall on the UNC Charlotte campus (later discovered to be Holshouser Hall).

Let’s just say that African-American students at UNC Charlotte didn’t take the offensive demonstration with a grain of salt.

To make matters worse UNC Charlotte Chancellor Dubois didn’t use rhetoric that the black community would have liked to hear when addressing the situation in a meeting with the Student Government Association the day after the photo surfaced.

Many students watched the dialogue between the Chancellor and students on the Student Government Association live feed. The consensus - “It’s a lot of freedom of speech bs.”

I think it’s safe to say that comedy probably isn’t in this student’s future.

Many students are skeptical whether or not a student resident truly came forward. By that eloquently phrased apology you would have thought they were next of kin to Shakespeare himself. Although the anonymous student will face punishment, his or her suspension from our ‘diverse’ university does not heal the heavy hearts of those affected. By those I mean black people, the hidden gem of UNC Charlotte.

Black UNCC has deemed Chancellor Dubois the point person for this the handling of the situation. His lack of visibility and limited efforts towards similar incidents in the past do not leave us with much faith or confidence in the age-old Caucasian Californian whose salary is half a million dollars.

Will Chancellor Dubois create a meaningful dialogue with Black UNCC and survive his self-constructed lion’s den? The stage is set...I just hope he rehearses.
