I Tried Out This Synthetic Lace Front Afro Wig And Got All The Compliments, Y'all

Earlier this year I reviewed these three dope wigs from the black-woman owned brand Toni Daley.

So y'all can imagine how hype I was when I discovered Big Hair No Care, an affordable line of synthetic clip-in afro hair pieces and lace front wigs founded by UK-based fashion blogger and confidence coach Freddie Harrel.

Synthetic wigs get a bad rap for looking cheap or fake, when the truth is that most people—including lots of black women—usually mistake my synthetic curly and afro wigs for my real hair. With BHNC, Freddie decided to forgo the unregulated human hair market and use alternative, premium fibers—or "fair hair"—for ethical purposes.

"We hear an increasing number of women being attacked at night and shaved or obligated to shave their heads as a result of financial instability crisis," reads the BHNC website. "A huge proportion of 'ethically sourced' human hair is bought from religious temples after women have shaved their heads as a means of religious devotion, only for it to be sold and imported to Western consumers. And while these religious institutions temples often claim to invest the money made from the hair back into local communities, there are fears not all are so honest with their windfall, choosing instead to keep it for religious officials."

I was in the mood for a little color, so decided on the Zero Drama Queen wig in ombre in 18 inches (it's also available in 14 and 16 inches.) The compact curls come tightly defined (think 3C/4C) with very little frizz and are manageable enough to gradually brush out and/or finger-comb for your desired look.

Also, if you're super low-maintenance like me (I like to just put on my wig and GO!) then you'll be happy to know that there are three combs at the front of each wig and adjustable straps at the back, which means no sewing or glueing required!

And unlike a lot of synthetic beauty supply store wigs, The Zero Drama Queen boasts four centimeters of fine, non-itchy Swiss lace, hand-stitched natural-looking knots, and a side part for when you wanna switch up the look. In other words, you won't be caught looking wiggy in this carefully crafted unit.

I typically have someone at the beauty supply store cut my lace front for $5, but because I was at home I put on my big girl draws, got my scissors, and trimmed off the excess lace along the hairline. I wouldn't worry too much about this part though unless you plan on displaying the hairline.

Once I trimmed the lace and separated and stretched the curls by hand, I was left with a bomb-ass fro that looked hella real. It's thick and dense, but also lightweight just like my own TWA. And even though the hairs have less alkaline base coating than traditional synthetic hairs, the unit still felt soft and looked nourished. TENS ACROSS THE BOARD!!!
