"Love Actually", One Burning Question I've Always Had About The Movie

It's that time of year again! Everyone starts watching their favorite holiday films, which may include Love Actually! You know the 2003 film written and directed by Richard Curtis. The movie has an ensemble cast which includes Emma Thompson, the late Alan Rickman, along with Hugh Grant and Kiera Knightly, to name a few.

I know we may have established that yes, this film is problematic (I've seen the BuzzFeed posts) in some areas but it's still one of my favorite films to watch around this time of year.

If you haven't seen the film but I imagine you have or else you probably wouldn't have clicked on the link. For the uninitiated, one of the story lines involves a married couple, played by Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson as Harry and Karen.

Harry goes on to cheat on his wife with his secretary.

His wife eventually finds out right before the big play their kids are involved in. It's one of my favorite scenes from Emma Thompson, you can just feel the heartache as she tries to keep it together for her kids.

She confronts her husband at the end of their kids performance but then the movie moves on to the other story lines and we don't see Harry and Karen again until the very end of the movie.

Karen along with some of the other characters are waiting at Heathrow Airport for their loved ones to return. Return from where!?

I always wondered, where did he go!? Were they going through a trial separation? Did she send him away as some kind of punishment? It looked like he had been away for some time, considering the kids had made a sign "Welcome Home Dad!" and that awkward kiss between them. Obviously they still had things to work out.

Anyway, a while back I tweeted at Emma Freud while watching Love Actually asking her where he had gone off to?

@emmafreud #LoveActually is on @CMT right now...I've always wondered at the end, where was Alan Rickman's character returning from in the airport? Where did he go? Do you know? πŸ€“πŸ˜

Emma Freud is a Producer and Script Editor who worked on Love Actually and happens to be dating Richard Curtis, the writer/director of the movie. As of right now, Richard Curtis doesn't have a twitter account.

Well, I actually got a reply!

@PaperRozee @CMT It was a business trip to copenhagen

Harry had been away on a business trip to Copenhagen! That's it! That's all! I had been overthinking the interaction at the end the whole time. The context of the scene and their interactions is all you really needed to infer the status of their relationship.

Though if you need further clarification as to what happend to their relationship after, Emma also answered another fans' question.

@JPerlstrom they stay together but home isn't as happy as it once was.

And if you need to know how far Harry went with his secretary, then Emma has an answer for that as well.

@carlotta429 DEFINITELY had an affair. i begged richard just to make it a flirtation, but no. the whole way.

I've thought way too much about this movie, like why couldn't Sara and Karl be together? I get that her brother didn't give her enough space but Karl couldn't be the understanding boyfriend or something? Sara couldn't let him in emotionally?

Anyway, if you'd like to read more about the movie and what other questions Emma may have answered checkout The Hollywood Reporter and Independent articles I found online from 2015. I wish I had googled it sooner :)
