How Well Do You Know Your Antibiotics?

Different antibiotics are able to target structures specific to prokaryotes because the structure is either only in prokaryotes (ex: cell wall) or the process/structures differ slightly in prokaryotes (ex: DNA replication, transcription, translation and metabolic pathways). However when an antibiotic attacks the plasma membrane, it is the only structure among the six that can be targeted in eukaryotes as well which makes the antibiotic non-prokaryotic specific.

What can you do to help stop the antibiotic crisis?

Bacteria nowadays are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics which is preventing them from being killed. This major problem has become known as the "Antibiotic Crisis."

In addition to mutations, bacteria can also acquire a pre-existing resistance gene from another bacterium.

How do bacteria acquire resistance to antibiotics?

80% of antibiotics are used unnecessarily in Agriculture to promote growth of livestock. In addition in the1980s, the pharmaceutical industry believed that they had "conquered" infectious diseases which led to the stall in antibiotic development. As a result of these factors, the Antibiotic Crisis emerged.

Antibiotics are not effective at all against viral infections such as the flu and colds because they are meant to target only bacteria.

In addition to our food microbes reside in the human gut which contributes to our overall health and are critical for recycling key nutrients
