Casting The (Almost) Perfect Muppet Hamilton Movie

Hamilton dropped on Disney+ at the beginning of July 2020, and Muppets Now drops at the end. It only makes sense to mash them together, Muppet Christmas Carol-style. But the question remains: who plays who?

ABOUT THAT YOUTUBE THING THAT'S BEEN GOING AROUND:

Recently, a YouTube video covering all of Act I of "Hamilton" but with Muppets has been going slightly viral. I started making this article well before that came out, and am not trying to step on any toes. The creator of that video did a good job!

First, let's get the obvious ones out of the way.

Who are the two leads of the show? And who are the two leading Muppets? Exactly.

Kermit the Frog as Alexander Hamilton

Of course. Kermit is the star of almost every Muppet production, so he'd have to lead this one. Just like with Lin-Manuel Miranda, he brings a sympathetic and somewhat heroic vibe to a character that, on paper isn't really that good of a dude. It's the dramatic role that Kermit's been waiting for to really show his range.

Also that green coat Hamilton wears at the end of Act 1/beginning of Act 2? Perfect Kermit color.

Miss Piggy as Eliza Schuyler/Hamilton

Again, duh. While she may want to play someone with more power like King George III, Miss Piggy would be convinced to portray the wife of our protagonist through the logic of "Well, she technically is the title character. Her last name IS Hamilton after all..." While it would be quieter than her usual fare, there would definitely be Oscar Buzz behind the supressed rage she could bring to "Burn"

Now it starts getting trickier.

While some of these Muppets fit into their characters perfectly, others may be a left field choice that are very interesting to picture. And it's not like this is ever going to be a real thing, so just go with it. (Plus, all the double casting is being kept. Because that's fun, and more of a challenge.)

Fozzie Bear as Aaron Burr

Let me get the cheesy thing out of the way. *Ahem* Fozzie Bear would want his audiences to "Talk less and smile more". Now that we're done with that, Kermit and Fozzie are always two peas in a pod best friends. Aside from Piggy, Fozzie is the person Kermit is closest with. It would be fascinating to take that dynamic and turn it into a "Frenemy" relationship. Plus, similar to Fozzie's experience on stage, Aaron Burr continually loses what he sets his heart on.

Sam Eagle as George Washington

The "Father of our country" has to be the most patriotic Muppet of the group. He'd bring a ton of gravitas and respect to the role, and it's the best way to make up for shortening his glorious 3-hour Salute to All Nations (But Mostly America) to a minute and a half.

Gonzo the Great as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton

If a pig and a frog get married and have a kid, they'll produce a...whatever. Fantasy sequences in Muppets Most Wanted be damned.

Renee Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler

The painful lack of significant female Muppets really shows here. The Muppet options for Angelica were Janice or Camilla the Chicken, but Renee deserves to stay. While Camilla would be hilarious, "Satisfied" would lose a lot of its power if it was turned into chicken noises. Plus, it's always funny to have a human inexplicably related to Muppets and falling in love with them (implying...relations instead of being explicit about it).

Rizzo the Rat as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson

The Lafayette/Jefferson role should be filled by someone who Kermit can really vibe with at first, and then turn around and become his mortal enemy. Rizzo has shown both relationships with Kermit, so it would be an interesting parallel. Plus, hearing Rizzo attempt a French accent would be A+.

Pepe the King Prawn as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison

This fits much better for the braggadosio of Hercules than the coughing whatever-ness of James Madison. Plus, I think Rizzo and Pepe not only have a good dynamic, but would be the two Muppets most likely to drop F-bombs.

Janice as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds

Sure, Janice works! She'd have fun. This is again the lack of prominent female Muppets. Camilla would be funny, but only for Peggy and not Maria Reynolds. Or maybe a seduction song with chicken noises would rule. Jury's still out on this one, honestly.

Statler and Waldorf as King George III (and his Royal Advisor Jerry)

Yes, it's kind of cheating to create a new character, but it's just like Muppet Christmas Carol's Jacob and Robert Marley. In Hamilton, King George is essentially a heckler that only the audience can see, so splitting his lines up between these two grumps (Statler as the King and Waldorf as the Advisor, of course) just makes sense.

...and the rest!

Of course, the rest of the Muppets would make up the smaller roles. Maybe Scooter as Samuel Seabury, Animal as Charles Lee, and Uncle Deadly as Eliza's father. And, of course, Lin-Manuel Miranda would have to show up somewhere. I'm thinking as James Reynolds, perhaps? Who knows.
