A Friendly Guide To The Beatitudes

Noelle Ullery and Madeline Vogelweid A period

The Beatitudes were delivered by Moses to help the disciples live according to God’s will. God is telling his people and us today that we need to be loving, helpful, and kind to those who are both our friends and enemies in order to reach Heaven. They should help us fulfill our vocation as Christians. The Beatitudes should offer us some form of happiness that we will fully experience in Heaven. If we follow the Beatitudes, then we have a more likely chance of eternal bliss with God in Heaven.

    1. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3. Those who don’t brag are awarded, for they will be happy forever. Children should be humble and not boast so they can feel good about themselves being kind to others. This relates to the Nerinx community because there are many athletes of different levels, so each level should be humble and not brag that one team has better uniforms or more trophies than another.

    2. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5:4. Those who are sad are awarded, for their family and friends will make them feel better. “The people who accept their suffering and acknowledge it will be at ease, despite the tragedy.” When children are sad or upset, they should try and see a good thing in the situation and will also be comforted. This relates to my family because my parents are always there to comfort me and remind me that feeling sad is okay because everything will work out in the end.

    3. “Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.” Matthew 5:8. Those who don’t sin are awarded, for they will be with God forever. “The people who do everything out of love and utter kindness for others from the bottom of their heart will be in communion with God forever.” Children should follow classroom rules because if they don't, they will experience consequences, like we do when we don't follow God's law. This relates to my friends because sometimes we are tempted to gossip about someone, but the topic should be changed because it will bring us closer to God and is the right thing to do, even if it’s harder.

    4. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9. Those who don’t start trouble will be called a child of God. “The people who go out of their way to establish peace among times of hardship and dispute will be God's children.” Children should learn how to be peaceful problem solvers in difficult situations. This relates to St. Louis because we need to work towards peace regarding the scenarios with police and black people.

After reading the Beatitudes, we understand that they are guidelines for us to be caring and kind during our lives. The Beatitudes are not only a set of laws but a key to fulfillment and happiness in life.
