This Is What People Celebrating The New Year In Sydney Hope For In 2018

"2017 has been everything. It’s had the best things of my life so far but also the worst. I want 2018 to be even better."

New Year. A time to reinvent yourself, set those resolutions, and stick two fingers up to 2017... or to crawl under a blanket and sob at everything you didn't achieve last year.

Let's go with the first one.

*Snaps for optimism*

So it's legit 2018 now!

BuzzFeed Australia went down to Circular Quay in Sydney on New Year's Eve to find out what its visitors learned in 2017, and what their hopes and dreams are for the year ahead. Here's what they said.

1. Fabienne, 24, Netherlands.

"2017 was the best year so far for me! I had a great year. I finally did what I wanted to do in coming to Australia. I met new people, did different things, and didn’t think about the past, just the future. I’d like 2018 to be the same, feeling great about myself and just doing what I want. I don’t want to plan anything. I just love where I am right now, living in the moment."

2. Becky, 35, England.

"With personal, love life, and business, 2017 was all very mixed. Not a bad year all in all, I can’t complain really. But in 2018 I’d like to plank for five minutes in the gym, get a bigger bum, go to Jamaica, and push myself creatively more with work."

3. Guillaume, 23, France.

"I finished my studies last year so it was a good one for me! For 2018 I hope to have a good year in Australia. I only arrived two weeks ago and I'm here for a year. I also would like some more money!"

4. Milly, 26, Netherlands.

"I always felt restlessness in me, like I wanted to see as many countries as I could before I can finally settle down and be ok with starting a family and stuff like that. 2017 has been everything, it’s had the best things of my life so far but also the worst. I want 2018 to be better than 2017, and I hope I get to travel more."

5. Chun An, 24, Taiwan.

"2017 wasn’t really a good year. I quit my job and tried to find a new one, but I haven’t yet. I’m a script writer for film, and it's quite hard to find jobs. I haven’t really thought about 2018 yet, but I would like to find a good job. I want to do something I’m really proud of, write a really good movie script."

6. Sylvain, 23, France.

"2017 was a good one for me! I came to Sydney in September and it was the best decision! I haven’t thought about any resolutions yet. Normally after two weeks I haven’t stuck to them so this year I’m not making any! I’d just like to improve my English as much as I can."

7. Alina, 25, Netherlands.

"2017 was a very good year. I quit a job that I absolutely loved to come here. Since I was little I’ve always wanted to come to Australia. So here I am and it feels very good to be here! I hope in 2018 I'll lose my fear of commitments. I hope that I can actually call my boyfriend 'my boyfriend', and that I can tell my parents about him after two years!"

8. Justine, 20, France.

"2017 was a good year because I completed some personal goals of mine. I practice Judo, and I won the European championship. In 2018 I want to continue in this way but I also want to spent more time with the people I love, and maybe try some new things."

9. Jennifer, 24, Taiwan.

"I am here in Australia with my friend to enjoy New Year’s Eve and visit this country. 2017 was good... I think. I did some new things in my work and I kind of liked that! There were some bad things too, but I try to forget about them. I hope my work can get better in 2018, and that my family and friends can all be very happy and healthy."

10. Joel, 29, Switzerland.

"2017 was positive and negative for me, as maybe every year is. Unfortunately last year I was successful in my job but unsuccessful in love. My girlfriend and I broke up, so that was bad. I hope that there will be only luck for 2018. I hope to find a good girl, but on the top of my list is to improve my physique."
