The mermaids that live amongst the warm waters that border continents. You can find them swimming among the coral reefs, keeping the tide gentle when children are learning to swim and cutting seals and turtles out of plastic bags. They also like to collect lost trinkets from the sandy reefs. They have brightly coloured tails that can be extremely decorative like the aquatic life that neighbours them. _Key characteristics: Caring, adventurous, playful._

Tropical Mermaid

The mermaids that live in the deepest depths of the oceans and are built for survival. They do not come up to the surface often, mostly flit around the deep chasms and the Mariana Trench. Their skin has the ability to become translucent in order to blend in with their environment. They are bio-luminescent and have very good night vision due to their dark habitat. _Key characteristics: Fearless, wise, secretive._

Deep-Sea Mermaid

These mermaids are koi-like, tender-hearted and shy. Though they stray from older humans, they like to play with children. They have an attraction to shiny objects, like bottle caps or rings, and like to make them into accessories. _Key characteristics: Romantic, mysterious, relaxed._

Freshwater Mermaid

These mermaids live in the arctic region due to their preference for colder temperatures. They are quite intelligent and sometimes are found helping scientists track fish migratory patterns and catching sample for them to study. They are generally goodhearted and toss fish to Inuit hunters who’ve had a bad day so they don’t have to go home without food. _Key characteristics: Protective, shy, curious._
