So, I'm entering the blog world as a new born blogger but I can't do so without letting you all know what this blog is about and who I am in the first place! First, I'd like to introduce myself... I'm Terri Newkirk! A 21 year old college student, an ovarian cancer survivor, a Charlottean, a nature enthusiast, and an all year round counselor at the Simmons YMCA! While starting this blog I felt like the only way to be successful would be to blog about something I'm passionate about and in the meat of my undergraduate years of college and being 21 I get asked that A LOT. I can honestly say that I've never had an answer to "what are you passionate about Terri?" until I opened my eyes to what was apart of my everyday life. As I mentioned before I'm a counselor at the Simmons YMCA and I came to the realization that, that is my passion. Let me explain a little further. I'm only 21 years old but I've been working with kids in some way, shape, or form since I was about 16 and I love it. When I started my journey as a counselor I never knew how much I could impact hundreds of kids at a time and didn't believe it. My experiences now, made me reminisce on the days of me attending a summer camp called camp hope haven in Virgina that I absolutely LOVED! I went to CHH when I was about 7 years old and I STILL remember my counselors to this day because of how much they loved and cared about me. I've come to understand that I am a role model for soooo many children from ages 5-13 that I can have my own part of "molding our future". I know this is probably the most cliché statement in the book but the children of today are our future of tomorrow and I know that the good that I fill these children with will last forever they way the good my counselors filled me with has lasted with me. For this blog I want to shine a light on adult and child relationships. I want to introduce child management techniques like No Nonsense Nurturing. No Nonsense Nurturing means to love up on our kids but again, maintain high expectations; don't waver. Pertaining to your expectations, pay attention to detail. Don't settle for less, you deserve the best and so does the youth of this generation. Be an inspiration and a role model for children that you are exposed to.
This blog will help people like myself in the childcare industry looking for ways to connect with their children, students, mentees, or any children that they come into contact with.
