The Different Places You Can Live When In College And Broke

A basic list of housing options. Use to find out what is right for you when in college.

1. On-Campus Housing

Living somewhere through your college is great if you can afford to give them even more money many aside from tuition. Most colleges have regular two-man style dorms, and some have suites and apartments as well. This option will keep you close to your classes, campus activities and most importantly, freshmen! The main downfall is the price factor. Normally, housing rates on-campus are more expensive than off-campus options. But hey, if you are a bad cook you will definitely appreciate that meal plan option.

2. Apartment

Most college kids move off-campus after getting through the dreaded on-campus freshman year. Since college towns normally have a wide variety of apartment housing, it can be fun to choose which you want to live in. Look for options important to you such as a a pool, tanning, location, room style, etc. My suggestion is finding one where you can bring your furry friends. Getting an apartment close enough to campus means you can walk to class. Many places provide shuttles to campus depending on the distance. Paying rent for an apartment can feel like a lot, but when compared to on-campus pricing, it is normally less expensive.

3. Rent A House

Renting a house with a few friends can be a very fun option for college kids. There is more space which is a big upside compared to being crammed in a dorm or apartment. Many people who choose this option enjoy hosing "social gatherings" also known as college parties. The rent can be higher or lower based on location and how nice of a place you pick out. If you are really low on cash, you always have the option of renting it our to your local fraternities. The downfall of renting a house is that you most likely will have to commute to campus. If this is not a big deal to you, then all signs point to yes.

4. Live At Home

Living at home is an option for students who live close enough to commute to class. Although this may not be the most exciting option, it is nice to spend time with family while saving a lot of money. Usually this means you don't have to pay for your food either, which can be a big savings. Depending on your financial situation, you have to decide what your priorities are. You can still have the "college experience" living at home as long as you have made friends on campus. Just be cautious to not come off as a strange 20 year old who still lives with his/her parents. Definitely emphasize the bank you are saving by living at home since that is your most undeniable argument.
