Survive In Europe Knowing These Three Phrases And Only A Handful Of Words.

Don’t speak the language? NO problem! Here are a few phrases and words that will help you get around anywhere you need to be. I am currently in Italy solo traveling and have found that the language barrier isn’t as bad as I thought with the help of a few phrases, words and the power of pointing to things.

    Survival Guide

How to survive Europe only knowing these three phrases and a few words! Phrase: Do you speak English?

-This is the most used phrase I have said around Italy. I mainly say this to people in retail stores who want to strike up a conversation with me. Out of respect I say this first to let them know 1. I’m not going to understand what you’re saying if you start talking to me. 2. I’m not ignoring you if you talk directly to me, I just don’t understand what you’re saying.

If they say no then I usually just say “It’s ok” Then point my fingers around the room to know that I’m just looking.

-Also, this helps because the retail associate will most likely print your receipt, then show you what the total amount of what you’re purchasing is before you whip out your money.

Phrase: My name is (insert name) I am from America/(Insert State you are from)

-This is usually just for people you are meeting if they are a friend of a friend. I am staying with a host family and they have introduced me to some of their friends, or family members. Most of the time people know you cannot speak their language and will attempt to speak what little English they know in order to have a conversation with you.

This phrase is simply a conversation starter and also shows that you know how to say at least one thing in their language!

Phrase: I only speak English, I do not understand

-This is mainly said to people who are trying to sell you something on the street or passing you by. A lot of street sellers can be very aggressive when trying to make that sale, they will say anything or even block you’re path if you try to go around them.

I’ve had someone constantly talk to me in their language and the only thing I have had to say is no (shakes head) and “I only speak English” To let them know that whatever bargain/deal they are trying to make with me isn’t going to work if I can’t understand what I’m buying.

    Additionally, here are a few words that have gotten me around the country and essential for you to know, these words include;

    Bathroom

    Dressing room

    Hello/goodbye

    Help

    Excuse me

    Thank you

    Yes/No
