Let's be honest, makeup can be hard

We can't all be beauty vloggers

And if you're like me, chances are you have no idea what you're doing but you've created some makeshift routine that works for you, but honestly isn't the best

I once used an old toothbrush to brush out my eyebrows

But my friends and the internet have shown me with the right tools, you too can improve and take your look from a 6 to a 10. So here's some stuff that took my look from tragic to tantalizing

You seasoned makeup pros are probably laughing, but I honestly thought primer was a scam until I used it for the first time. You can find basic ones that work well at drugstores, Ulta Beauty, or on Amazon!

4. Eyeliner Pens

As a girl who took a painstakingly long time learning to use liquid eyeliner, eyeliner pens made my life 10,000 times easier. Stila makes one of my favorite ones and you can get it at Sephora

5. A Versatile Eyeshadow Palette

Let's be real, eyeshadow palettes are expensive. And doing the research to find a palette that has both neutral and bold shades is totally worth your time. So do your research ladies! (and scope for sales because who doesn't like to save a few bucks)

6. Makeup Brush AND Beauty Blender/Makeup Sponge

As someone who used their fingers to apply foundation for longer than I'd like to admit, I've recently learned that having both foundation brushes and beauty blenders gives you more control over the kind of coverage you want. You can find them basically anywhere makeup is sold, but I'd recommend doing more research when it comes to makeup brushes. Everyone has a preference and you have to find yours!

7. A Lip Scrub

No one likes crusty lips, especially if you're partial to long-wear matte lipsticks like I am. Lip scrubs are a simple way to keep your lips moisturized and soft. Bit beauty makes a fantastic one, but if you're looking to save a few bucks, you can always make your own at home! I like to use brown sugar, shea butter, and honey!

8. A Solid Pre-Makeup Moisturizer

Everyone loves smooth skin, and I swear by Glossier's Priming Moisturizer if you want to have it. Barefaced or full glam, my skin is always happier after I use this moisturizer.

9. Highlighter Brush

As someone who is often overwhelmed by the amount of makeup brush options there is out there, I've come to find a highlighter brush is actually quite handy. I love highlighter (I almost never go without it), and these brushes have helped me apply it not only evenly, but quickly!

10. Setting Spray

After you've painstakingly applied a masterpiece to your face, all you want it to do is stay in place, and urban decay's all-nighter setting spray is the way to do it. Every time I use it, my makeup does not budge unless I want it too, and the mini size lasts a good amount of time and only costs $15!
