Are You Qualified To Be A Leader?

You are finally a Residential Assistant in housing! As a Residential Assistant, it is your responsibility to report any evidence of alcohol or that a party with alcohol is taking place within the dorms, as well as you believe that drinking, especially underage, is wrong. Your friends tell you about a group of underage boys that are throwing a party involving alcohol in their dorm room. They did not intend to report these boys to you, but rather ask you to go to their party to have some fun. Once you tell your friends that because of your status as RA you must report the party. They then threaten that if you tell, they will never speak to you again. You are in a dilemma, because as an RA and a person who believes underage drinking wrong, you feel a responsibility to report this party. However, you don't want to lose your friends. What would you do?

You are the founder and president of a conservationist club that hopes to help save the Earth. You learn through other members that a very famous person would love to come speak at one of your club meetings, but his goal in doing so is to discourage conservation practices, and to encourage others in believing that pollution is not an issue humanity should be concerned with. You have always believed conservation is important, and have spread this belief with your club's participants. If this guest speaks, he will be sending mixed messages about that values that you and your club stand for; yet, if you let this guest speak, you know that your club will gain more members and maybe receive more money in the process. Do you let the guest speak, or do you decline his request?

You are in the process of creating a club for future Wildlife Biologists. However, to create this club, you must go through a series of interviews with the university, complete a series of documents that speak to your intentions in creating the club and how it will function, as well as gain a professor's sponsorship. Even when you create the club, you recognize you will still have more challenges to face, as there will be few members due to the exclusiveness of this career field, and that you will have to take time out of your day to run the club. You are biology major, so you have to spend a lot of time studying and in class; however, you know that creating this club is something you truly want to create, as you would love to meet and inspire other people looking at the same career as you. Do you go through with creating the club, or do you decide against it?

You are doing a group project for your business class. You have decided you wanted to work on the marketing part of the project, as you are decent at marketing, and understand the basics of how to convince someone to buy a product. However, another component to the project is to produce a financial out look, which you so happen to be better at than marketing. You group mate is a marketing extraordinaire, and also wants to do the marketing portion. You really want to do the marketing portion, but you also recognize that you might find better academic success in giving your group mate the marketing part, while you work on the financial plan. How do you split up the group?

You are the chief organizer of the university-wide pageant, which allows young women to showcase their talents and aspirations. However, you have realized some of your staff are appalled by the idea of a pageant, and think that its sexist origins dictate its image today. You do not agree with them, and want everyone on your staff to share the same, positive idea about pageants, as it will unify the staff in working harder towards their goal of creating one. You can either civilly discuss with these select people about why pageants are no longer sexist, as if you come to an agreement, you can unify as a stronger organization under one cause, or you can just kick them out of the organization for simply not agreeing with you. What do you choose?

You have created a new fan club on campus for the rock band, The Beatles. You notice as people filter in to the first club meeting, they all do not talk to each other. You realize that these people clearly have different interest, evident in that they have already started bickering over topics such as which sports team is better or if glasses are a good accessory. You really would like to try and help these individuals realize that they are here because they share the same interest for the Beatles; therefore assisting in creating a unifying cause to motivate the club and hopefully causing some friendships to blossom. However, doing so would require more time than you wished in helping develop this club. Do you intervene, or do you continue to let them bicker?

You are the leader of the Conservation Club on campus. You have come to recognize that your surrounding community is littered with trash, and is therefore creating an unsafe environment for the community, as well as contributing to the problem of pollution. You begin to ponder if your club should organize a day in which you pick up trash around the city, as it would benefit your local and global community. Everyone in your club agrees it is a fantastic idea, as it exemplifies the responsibility one has to their community. However, as you plan the event, you realize the day it would fall on would also be the same day as your date night with your significant other, whom you haven't seen in two weeks. You are now faced with a split decision: Do you go through with your community out reach project, or do you go on your date?

You are the president of the Photography Club. You are having a small meeting with the Vice President, Historian, and Treasurer. During the middle of the meeting, you notice that the Historian has not been paying attention. Her eyes are puffy, and it looks like she's been crying. You want to address her issue, but you also don't want to stop the meeting. What do you do?

You are in the middle of a community service project, and you realize that number of volunteers that showed up far exceeds your expectations. So much so, that you could go home and take the day off, as your position would be filled. However, because you are the president of the club, you want to set a good example. What do you do?

You are a Residential Assistant in one of the campus dormitories. As you are walking down the hallway, you see that two boys are screaming at each other in the hallway. They notice that you are observing them, and approach you to present their predicament. These two boys named Aaron and Bob are roommates, and it turns out Aaron has been using Bob's TV while Bob has been in class. Bob and Aaron are furious at each other, so much so that they ask you to move them to different rooms. However, they are not violent toward each other yet, so the situation still has hope for a far less extreme resolution. You realize that there is an issue that definitely needs to be resolved, but you don't want to over-react to the situation. What do you do? WARNING: TWO ANSWERS ARE RIGHT, BUT YOU ONLY HAVE TO CHOOSE ONE OF THEM.

You certainly have a command of the "7 Cs" of leadership! You are **conscious** of who you are, your strengths, and you utilize them effectively in leading others. You are **consistent** in your beliefs, and are honest when communicating with others, as well as you show **commitment** to whatever you are trying to achieve, which you should be proud of. You might want think of it as "Grit" as defined by Angela Lee Duckworth, a frequent TEDTalks guest. Her definition of this term is the ability to commit one's self to hard work and determination. It is also what defines a well rounded human being, and based on your approach to the situations, you certainly have this quality! You also exhibit the ability to **collaborate** with others, and are not afraid to admit when you need help. You are a group player, and try to do what's best for the group, rather than what's best for you. You also prefer harmony over discourse, and are not afraid to remind others of their shared **common purpose** within the group. You also are a problem solver, and try to handle **controversy with civility** to the best of your ability, and remain sensitive and impartial when faced with an issue. Lastly, you understand your role as **citizen** within society, and try to leave a lasting impact on your community because your recognize the local and global benefits of doing so. Congratulations, you are a leader!

You are an excellent leader!

You do show some aptitude to be a leader; however, you are not quite there yet. You still have yet to conquer the 7 Cs of social change. You can be **inconsistent** in your values, as you still are not completely **conscious** of who you are and what you believe. You also tend to cower away from challenges and lack **commitment** in achieving your goals, which prevents you from going after your dreams. You also can tend to be a bit selfish, and think based on what works best for you, which get in the way of your ability to **collaborate** with others. Your selfishness can also get in the way of your ability to unite other people for a **common purpose**, as you yourself cannot even see the bigger picture. Your tendency to do things that are your best interest gets in the way of handling **controversy with civility**, as to find a resolution you have to be willing to be understanding of the other point of view, and compromise. Because you often want things to go your way, it is hard for you to resolve conflict. You also have yet to recognize the importance of role as a **citizen** within society. Because you are so blinded on yourself and your problems, you cannot see the needs of your community, and if you do, you are very reluctant to help. However; this doesn't men you lack potential to be a leader. My advice is to find a sense of self esteem and try to find your sense of purpose, as well as try to be empathetic in selfless in situations that require you to bend a little. Also, try your hand at some leadership roles. Sometimes, the best way to learn to do something is to jump right in the deep end and try to swim. With a little soul searching and experience under your belt, you'll begin to understand what it truly means to be leader!

You still have a long ways to go until you are ready to be a leader.
