The Celebrity Overshare: Chill Or Not Chill?

In a recent cover story for Vulture, Jenny Slate opened the floodgates about her relationship with ex, Chris Evans. Her highly-public honesty about her life and romantic relationships is one way of dealing with the spotlight, but it can be a fine line to tread when it comes to public opinion. Let's look at Jenny and three other famous oversharers and ask, once and for all, celebrity oversharing: chill or not chill?

JENNY SLATE

Jenny opened up about her breakup with Chris Evans, revealing not only details about their relationship and her love for him, but also her insecurities about dating a star and dealing with fallout from her divorce. However, dishing about Hollywood megastars isn't Jenny's only overshare. Notes profiler Jada Yuan, "Her brand, if you can call it that, is built on vulnerability, whether she’s revealing her innermost insecurities through an animated shell or telling Seth Meyers on TV that she was so stoned in college she accidentally signed up for an astronomy class thinking she’d learn about astrology." Because Jenny is such a talented comedian, her honesty comes across as funny and charming. It also helps that she isn't so omnipresent that we get tired of her.

VERDICT: CHILL

TAYLOR SWIFT

Taylor is the OG modern era oversharer. Her fans fell in love with her honesty and relatable way of talking about relationships. They also loved the secret clues Taylor would leave in her albums to figure out who each song was about. Taylor's cute and quirky oversharing hit its peak with her 2009 SNL monologue, where she dished about Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, and Kanye. As time went on, however, she gained a reputation as a serial dater, and her desire to control her "narrative" made her enemies like Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian. It didn't help that her dominance of the radio airwaves means she's always in the public consciousness. For Taylor, the sharing became just too much.

VERDICT: NOT CHILL

JENNIFER LAWERENCE

When J.Law shot to fame as Katniss Everdeen, she became adored for being "just like us." Fans found her relatable for talking about her love of food, her relationship to her body, and her klutziness (who could forget her epic trip up before accepting her Oscar!). However, with Jennifer her outspokenness can be taken positively or negatively, depending on your viewpoint. Take, for example, when she called out a reporter at the Golden Globes - was it funny or just plain rude? Many of J.Law's funny, oversharing moments seem to teeter that line. However, she's also been an advocate for women's issues, speaking out about the wage gap and the unlawfulness of her leaked nude photos. She may not be for everyone, but the end of the day, Jennifer's brash personality is just that.

CHRISSY TEIGEN

Chrissy is everyone's current favorite on the internet, and a self proclaimed "chronic oversharer." Her Twitter feed is the perfect mix of shutting down trolls, wild party stories, and sharing her adorable family. Whether she's sending a fan a blender or trading outfits with a stripper, her life appears to be a total open book. Chrissy's public persona is a lot of fun, but she also uses her platform to talk about subjects that are often taboo for women, like how she struggled to get pregnant or her battle with postpartum depression. In her own way, she's made it easier to talk about difficult issues.
