1. Saudia Arabia sends its first-ever female Olympians in the 2012 games.

Sprinter Sarah Attar and judoka Wojdan Shaherkhani were the first women ever to represent Saudia Arabia in the Olympics, and hopefully the first of many more. In addition, the 2012 Olympics were the first time every participating country was represented by women. A big win!

2. This 101-year-old man runs marathons like no one's business.

Think old people can't do anything? You're wrong! Fauja Singh is the oldest person to ever complete the London Marathon. He has stated, "I won't stop running until I die. The next target, God willing, is to be the oldest marathon runner ever."

3. Brazil's first gymnast wins a gold medal in the 2012 games!

It was assumed that China's champion, Chen, would win the gold in men's rings, but the unexpected happened! Before Arthur Zanetti, no Brazilian gymnast, male or female, had ever won an Olympic medal! His surprising victory made his entire country proud, and exciting things are to come in Rio in the 2016 games.

4. Y.E. Yang scores the victory!

Back in 2009 Tiger Woods was "the man" of the golfing world. So when Y.E. Yang of South Korea came and took the 2009 PGA Championship, the world was shocked!

5. Two girls won the crown for Homecoming Queen AND King.

Rebeca Arellano (King) and Haileigh Adams (Queen) became the first same-sex Homecoming King and Queen at Patrick Henry High School in California. The two girls were so happy from the support they've received from family, friends, and students and staff at the school.

Heavyweight boxer James Braddock's victory over Max Baer was a Cinderella story indeed! (See the movie made in 2005.) Braddock made a way for himself by climbing up the ranks of boxing, and won the heavyweight championship title! He was an inspiration to many in the 1930s.

7. This unexpected beauty queen won Miss Congeniality for Miss Universe Canada.

Jenna Talackova, born a man and was nearly disqualified from the Miss Universe Canada competition. The organization allowed Talackova to compete with Donald Trump issuing the statement, "[a]s long as she meets the standards of legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, which we understand that she does, Jenna Talackova is free to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant." She made it to the top 12 of the competition and was awarded Miss Congeniality!

8. Leon Spinks stings harder than Muhammad Ali.

Okay, so when you fight the world's greatest fighter, do you think you can come out on top? That's what Leon Spinks did! It was definitely not an easy win, but he won their match in 1978. He just needed his one shot!

9. Arcade Fire beat Lady Gaga for a Grammy.

Lady Gaga was a shoo-in for best album of the year, so everyone was surprised when Arcade Fire came out of nowhere and won the Grammy. Puzzled teenagers on Twitter wondered, "Who is Arcade Fire?" and hipsters smugly smiled and thought "I knew of them before you."

In the 1980 Winter Olympics, it was pretty much guaranteed that the Soviet Union was going to dominate in men's hockey. Their team was far superior to the U.S.'s team, which consisted of mostly college players. But somehow, the United States team scored an epic victory against the Soviets and showed the world that anything can happen with teamwork.
