While playing a true or false game, she revealed an unknown fact about herself: she knows American Sign Language (ASL)!
Dominique's two costars Tobe Nwigwe and Anthony Ramos were stunned as she effortlessly signed for them:
Dominique explained that she felt like it was something she needed to do in order to be of service to those in the deaf community. "I learned it in college and I figured maybe that would be helpful to other people," Dominique said.
The 32-year-old actress said how she related to the deaf community as she has often felt misunderstood in certain spaces as a Black woman.
"As a Black person having to go into other areas where nobody is forced to understand where I come from, I wondered what it would be like to be deaf and feel like you have to navigate the world when nobody else is forced to navigate with you because they don't have to."
"I worked at the movie theater and this woman came in and asked 'Can I have popcorn?' so I asked if she wanted butter and she signed 'I'm sorry, I'm deaf.' I said 'Oh, I'm sorry' and signed asking, 'Did she want butter on her popcorn?' She was shocked and very excitedly told her daughter," Dominique concluded.
The clip of Dominique revealing her ASL journey has gone viral with over 3 million views and counting. Her candidness and selflessness are being praised online as she has inspired others to do the same.
