You obviously know Kamala Harris by now.
The California senator is the first Black and South Asian woman on a presidential ticket for any major party in history.
And on a much lighter note? She's ALSO the first VP candidate to wear sneakers for a good portion of her campaign.
And yes, I know. Is this urgent news? Nope. But is this a quick, low-key distraction we can have in the year 2020??
INDEED IT IS.
People on Twitter were into it.
This is minuscule in the grand scheme of things, but seeing @KamalaHarris campaign in Converse makes me smile. Women were not allowed to wear pants on the Senate floor until 1993. We’re taught to push through the pain of wearing heels. Now our VP candidate is rocking sneakers. https://t.co/2pCSVQ3ywm
As this tweet points out, women had to wear skirts or dresses on the Senate floor until the '90s. And high heels are still the standard for women in national politics.
And honestly, can you blame them?
That feeling when you realize the future Vice President of the United States owns the same pair of high top black leather @Converse Chuck Taylors as you. @KamalaHarris is truly for, by and of the people.
Back on the trail, Kamala's worn them during speeches:
On marches:
Last week, she wore them to de-plane before an event — and within a few hours, "Chuck Taylors" was trending on Twitter.
Her Chucks habit goes back at least a few years. She told The Cut back in 2018: "I run through airports in my Converse sneakers. I have a whole collection of Chuck Taylors."
Now, it's not *all* sneakers on the trail. She'll sometimes ditch them for, say, a ~sensible wedge~.
Or heels for TV:
But a lot of times, it's Chucks.
