17 Reasons Why Spongebob Squarepants Is A Valid Musical, Damn It

Are you ready, kids?? Warning for spoilers!

In case you didn’t know, there is currently a Spongebob musical on Broadway. I know what you’re thinking. “A Spongebob musical? Lol that’s so dumb.” BUT LET ME TELL YOU. It’s freaking genius, and here is why:

    1. It has such a positive message!

The television series the show is based on may come off as more comedic in its nature than inspiring, but Spongebob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical has an incredibly motivational, positive message of optimism, determination and community. The story follows Spongebob, Sandy and Patrick throughout their mission to save the town of Bikini Bottom when a volcano threatens to erupt and destroy everything. Sandy comes up with a plan that could potentially save the town, but everyone doubts Sandy, Spongebob and Patrick’s ability to save the day. Sandy faces a ton of criticism, but Spongebob supports her and motivates her. With Sandy being the brains, and Patrick being the brawn, Spongebob isn’t sure what he brings to the team, but in the end he learns it’s “management skills” - otherwise known as his skill at being a positive leader and encouraging, supporting and building up the people around him. Spoiler alert: at the end of the show, they aren’t quite sure if Sandy’s plan worked, and as they prepare for the end to come, Spongebob prompts everyone to share a happy moment together, reminding everyone that even their last day can still be “the best day ever.” They all sing, dance and have fun, all because Spongebob was optimistic enough to encourage that in the people around him!

    2. There's real life issues presented in the story.

One scene shows Sandy being discriminated for being a “land mammal” and even shows some Bikini Bottom residents putting derogatory graffiti about her on a plank of wood. Spongebob and Patrick find the wood and break it in half, showing solidarity for their friend. There’s also themes of lack of honesty from the government and distrust in the media, and its overall message of preserving positivity, friendship and hope through times of crisis in which the world is divided is highly relevant today.

    3. It's so creative!

    4. The costumes are freaking genius.

    5. The set is so inventive!

    6. It's an immersive experience.

    7. PATCHY THE PIRATE.

    8. The ensemble is SO talented!

With frequent high energy dance numbers, Spongebob Squarepants requires some very talented dancers and THEY CAME THROUGH. Not only are the dancers incredible, but the minor characters will blow you away as much as the leads - Pearl can belt like no other and the audience freaks out every time she sings. The lead actors are always taking every chance they can to make sure the ensemble knows they’re appreciated, too, which is so important.

    9. There's so many crazy stunts!

Spongebob and Patrick both do some insane things throughout the show. In one scene, Patrick descends onto the stage on Sandy’s jetpack, and at the climax of the show, Spongebob sings Just a Simple Sponge (Reprise) while jumping and climbing on a jungle gym-like structure.

    10. There's plenty of references to the original show.

Tbh, if I left this show without hearing Patrick ask if mayonnaise is an instrument, I would’ve demanded a refund.

    11. It's obviously hilarious.

And not just in the goofy-children’s-show way you’d expect, it’s actually just really funny in general. There’s clever jokes throughout the entire show that people of all ages will laugh at!

    12. Spongebob is precious.

    13. And finally, this doesn’t have to do with the actual show itself, but can we just take a moment to appreciate the official Twitter account?
