"[People with food allergies] are not faking it or doing it for attention, and they don't deserve to have their health weaponized against them.”

Von described their allergy, saying, "I don't react to a whole onion sitting in a room, but I have a huge reaction as soon as it's chopped up and the chemical is released." Von also has celiac disease and certain autoimmune sensitivities that can be common among those with food allergies. When their roommate moved in, Von says that they walked her through the basics of kitchen safety, as well as efforts necessary to avoid cross-contamination, like using separate toasters.
After some time, Von decided that they were no longer willing to discuss issues in person, and said, "I told her at that point, I wouldn't interact with her verbally any further, and she would have to email me about anything to do with the apartment."
