    Here Are The Best And Worst Outfits From "Star Wars", From A Lifelong Fan Who Can Recite Every Film

    Only real Star Wars fans have the same #1.

    Every December, I have a tradition where I watch every single Star Wars film in order. It's something that I look forward to all year, especially because I get to see all of the space outfits that I love, along with the ones that I love to hate.

    Here are a few of the hits and misses that I spotted along the way:

    14. The Jedi braids in The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones

    Listen, I know that this is technically a hairstyle and not an outfit, but I will take any and all opportunities to complain about one of the worst looks I've seen in the prequels. This is like three different hairstyles in one, and none of them are good.

    What do you even ask your barber for when you get this haircut? I think this is the common look for Padawans, so I can only assume that it's used to encourage Jedi not to form attachments because there's no way I'd hang out with someone who has the world's tiniest ponytail next to the world's tiniest braid. 

    This is the space version of a mullet, which makes sense because it is out of this world terrible. 

    13. Obi-Wan's Outfit in A New Hope

    Poor old Obi-Wan has been rocking the same boring old Jedi robes since the end of the Clone Wars, and I have had enough. Don't get me wrong, I love an earth-toned look as much as the next guy, but the cut of these clothes absolutely makes it look more like he's wearing a bathrobe rather than an actual outfit.

    Spoiler alert for a movie that came out in 1977: Obi-Wan dies in A New Hope and it's such a shame that he dies wearing such a lame outfit. Plus, I'm positive that those enormous sleeves absolutely dip into sauces and soups while he's eating. R.I.P to Obi-Wan, sorry that your Force Ghost is somehow also stuck in these robes.

    12. Padmé's All-White Outfit in Attack of the Clones

    Very rarely do I critique one of Padmé's outfits, but this one truly made no sense to me. As you can see, it starts off as a full outfit, but the shirt conveniently is cut in half during battle when a monster slices across her back. Look, I love a crop top, but it seems too weird to try and make an outfit become accidentally sexy during the middle of battle. Also, she loses half of her sleeve but still keeps the metal band on her arm? Somebody get George Lucas on the phone, I need him to explain this to me. 

    Had the outfit started off as a crop top, I wouldn't have a problem. But like this, Padmé looks like a teenager who just discovered what "upcycling" means and is trying to reinvent all of her old outfits. 

    11. Snoke's Outfit in The Last Jedi

    People have talked about the way that this man looks like he's wearing Hugh Hefner's nightgown, right? I think that this is supposed to be a robe similar to the Sith, but for some reason, he's belted it, which is totally a fashion choice that is not working for me. As someone who spent the entirety of The Force Awakens believing that Snoke was going to be a frightening villain, it's sort of contradictory to see him for the first time in person when he's dressed like an extra in the space version of Saturday Night Fever.

    Could you imagine working for The First Order, and your boss is Kylo Ren, and HIS boss is this naked mole rat who looks like he thought it was Pajama Day at work? I don't even know how I would fix this outfit. Maybe just toss out the entire robe and invest in a hat with a very wide brim to cover your face.

    10. Kylo Ren's Lack-of-An-Outfit in The Last Jedi

    You knew this would be here, and if you didn't, you're lying to yourself. There is no amount of money that I wouldn't pay to be inside of Rian Johnson's mind when he shot this scene. It is arguably the most naked that anyone has been in a Star Wars movie, and I have definitively never in my life wanted a character to be more clothed than this moment.

    I still have no idea what I'm even looking at. Are those high-waisted pants? Adam Driver is built like a brick house, why would you cut off part of his torso and make his chest look like a little square? Or is there some kind of black wrapping around his middle that then leads into the pants? Is he rehearsing for the First Order's production of Swan Lake and those are dance pants? 

    I watch this movie every year, and this scene confuses me more every time I see it.

    Intermission: The Droids

    Even droids are not immune to my bullying. C-3PO and R2D2 are absolute classics. I love their height difference, I love that R2D2 is shaped like a trash can, and I love C-3PO's design in the sequel trilogy even more with his new red arm. These droids have been dealing with the Skywalker family drama for three generations and so I commend them for their bravery and their fashion sense.

    L-3 3-7's design isn't terrible, but it's also not especially interesting to look at.  Most of the droids in the Star Wars universe are either CGI or a mixture of on-set costumes and practical effects. Solo actually created a merging of the two with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the voice of L-3, wearing pieces of an L-3 costume with a green screen suit underneath to achieve a mixture of a physical and computer-generated look in the final film. 

    The process is definitely cool to see, but the final product just sort of looks like they tried to make the droid look as close to a human woman as possible, which is decidedly uninteresting.

    9. Luke Skywalker's Outfit in A New Hope

    Sometimes it's the simple outfits that we love the most. This outfit makes the list because of Mark Hamill's earlier reveal of a behind-the-scenes secret that the pants that Luke wears in this film are actually bleached Levi's. With all the hype and theatricality that surrounds it today, it can sometimes be difficult to remember that the first Star Wars film wasn't yet the blockbuster it would be known to be, so quick fixes and cutting corners were more common than you'd think in the original films.

    I can always appreciate a DIY moment, and I know that this was a decision made by a costume designer, but it's still really funny to picture Luke Skywalker bleaching his jeans in the bathtub to get them to fit into his all white ensemble.

    8. Obi-Wan's Outfit in Revenge of the Sith

    Now this is a Jedi. This man is about to chop his best friend in half and watch him roll into lava, and he's going to look AMAZING while he's doing it. Look at the vest layered over the shirt! Look at the cinched belt with the lightsaber hanging off the side! Look at the absolute POWER STANCE he's pulling at the top of the ship before he gets to the bottom and drops his cloak like a burlesque performer. The DRAMA of it all!

    I simply love to see it. This outfit is a 10/10 - The hottest thing on Mustafar is Obi-Wan's fit, and you know, probably Anakin after he falls into that lava or whatever.

    7. Leia's Outfit in A New Hope

    Her home planet's just been blown up, she's imprisoned and scheduled for execution and she still has the audacity to look this good. This is the all-white outfit that gave me what Padme's outfit didn't. It's fairly simple, but the length and cut of the dress still make her look regal.

    It's also a great outfit for an adventure. She's shooting stormtroopers in it trying to escape the Death Star, and the loose fit of the dress and sturdy shoes help with mobility. This look absolutely screams that she is a princess ready to get in on the action. Don't even get me started on the hair. Every inch of this fit is iconic.

    6. Kylo Ren's Outfit in The Force Awakens

    He's beauty, he's grace, he killed his dad in outer space.

    I think that a lot of Star Wars villains are resigned to having boring costumes because the primary color they're forced to work with is black. Kylo's costume is no different, but I love it because it means that the attention can now be focused on the fabric instead. The Force Awakens costume designer Michael Kaplan has spoken about this costume, mentioning the different textures and weights of the fabrics involved help to give interest to the costume.

    Also, I love this iteration of the mask. The silver detail in it gives a metallic look that I absolutely dig, and it's even cooler to see the red light of his saber reflected in the metallic stripes of the mask. It's the perfect mix of homage to previous Star Wars villains like Darth Vader with enough new details that still keep things interesting.

    5. The "It Suits You" Jacket in The Force Awakens

    The jacket of the Resistance. This jacket is well worn, well-loved and somehow looks amazing on every person that wears it. I'm pretty sure even Rey has it on at some point. The texture along the shoulders is great, along with the asymmetrical red on the collar. 

    It's kind of a token of the Resistance, passed from Poe to Finn when he defects from the First Order, and then over to Rey on Starkiller Base when Finn comes back to rescue her. I've got nothing but kind words for the Resistance's communal jacket of friendship, except that I hope that Poe is currently making a miniature version for BB-8.

    4. General Organa's Outfit in The Force Awakens

    This is everything that I've ever wanted in a Leia outfit. It's simple, it's got layers, and I love the color coordination. As a character that we know for her fashion, it's really interesting to see Leia in The Force Awakens to check and see how her style has evolved. It would have been too easy to put her in a flowy gown like she's worn in the previous trilogy, or to even run in the other direction and put her in something shapeless and mundane to try and show that she's too focused on work to care about fashion. 

    This outfit meets right at the intersection of comfy and cute, and it also makes me want to raid her closet just as much as I did when I was watching the original trilogy.

    3. Luke "The Chanel Boots" Skywalker's outfit in Return of the Jedi

    THIS is the outfit! Luke has spent the last two films of this trilogy in what I can only describe as "farm-boy chic" until he rolls up in ROTJ looking like an ex who is determined to win the breakup. I love so many things about this outfit: The All-Black coordination, the cloak, the fitted top, the BOOTS. 

    We could also talk about how this fit demonstrates his progression as a character; As he rounds the corner to finish his training and finally become a Jedi, he sheds previous clothing that more closely resembles who he was on Tatooine in favor of something that you'd expect a Jedi to wear. You could also make the argument that the all-black outfit is indicative of the internal struggle that Luke has throughout this movie between the dark and the light. You could also say "Shut up Maya, this outfit is important because he's hot in it" and you would be correct. 

    2. Lando Calrissian's Outfits in The Entire Star Wars Saga

    This character would look good in anything, yet he's the best-dressed man in the galaxy. Whether he's played by Donald Glover or Billy Dee Williams, Lando never misses the mark with an outfit. Also, I can admire a man who knows his colors, and he does look so good in blue and yellow. 

    He's also one of the only Star Wars characters that I see with a cape, which is an absolute crime. Look at the way that it swishes when he walks! He's the definition of space luxury, and even when he's standing next to Han Solo, he's the coolest looking guy in the galaxy.  

    1. Chewbacca in Star Wars

    The fur is a part of his body, so I can only assume that this guy spends the entire Star Wars saga fully naked, and I have nothing but respect for him.
