Fate of the Furious Movie review

Fate of the Furious (Spoilers!) Score 8 out of 10

High octane use to describe the Fast and the Furious franchise but Fate of the Furious has sent it to supersonic heights of absurdly insane proportions.

The Fate of the Furious film follows the franchises typical formula, opening up with booty shots in an exotic location and ending on explosively dramatic and cheesey action shots that inexplicably defy all logical and scientific rules of nature.

The film was fun. There were many scenes that clearly involved a great deal of creatively and thousands of hours of manpower. The spectacle that is the Fate of the Furious highlights much of what makes the franchise so awesome.

    Core Cast

The cast functions as an organically dysfunctional family. The family dynamics and chemistry never fail to bring on the laughs or drama.

    Scott Eastwood

The most awkward character of the film comes in the form of Scott Eastwood. Eastwood plays a government agent, in training, whom directs the Fast and the Furious team to take down Dom.

Eastwood does not meld well with the franchise. He served mainly as comic relief, but suffered from a lack of comedic timing and acting talent. Often times, Eastwood's character was a nuisance to the Fast and the Furious team.

Eastwood felt like he was shoehorned into the film because of his lineage.

    Cipher

In this film Dom has gone rogue and is up against his team, thanks to the brilliant portrayal of the villainess hacker, Cipher, played by Charlize Theron.

Theron was diabolically delicious, as Cipher, a bit over the top at times, but still well done.

Theron was wicked and cold-hearted enough that her character made for a worthy adversary to the team and government.

If it wasn't for Dom's resourcefulness and aid from Helen Mirren's character, Deckard's mom, Cipher could have ruled the world.

    Favorite Scene
One of my favorite scenes in the film was watching Jason Stathom fight off a mob of thugs all while carrying a baby around. The baby survived the ordeal while listening to the chipmunks on a pair of headphones.

The baby is a born adrenaline junkie just like his father Dom. There is no denying his parentage.

Also, remind me never to hire Stathom as a babbysitter.

    Ramsey?

When the character of Ramsey appeared on screen, I was like who the eff is this? I had to rewatch the Fast and Furious 7 trailer to jog my memory.

The Fast and Furious 7 film was overshadowed by Paul Walker's death, that the story was all but forgotten, at least by me it was. Either way Ramsey had very little to offer the team, other than her pretty little face and the occasional semi-innocent lust fight between Roman and Tej over her.

    Letty and Dom

Letty and Dom share the best chemistry on screen. Their romance is quite believable which makes Dom's betrayal much more heartbreaking. Dom and Letty are the ultimate power couple. It was wise to open up the film with these two lovebirds.

The reason for Dom's turn to the dark side was reasonable and unexpected. I had to do some digging to recall who the mother of his child was. That's the issue with overly extended franchises, its hard to recall details. Once I figured it out. I was good to go.

A quick rundown montage or sequence, in the opening credits would have done wonders because not all of us non-hardcore fans can keep up.

    Personal thoughts

Fate of the Furious shovels up a mountain load of drama. The film felt like a soap opera featuring a group of highly elite superheroes.

The teams presence and skills are so absurd, I felt like I was watching an episode of Power Rangers Turbo. Shift into Turbo!

    Diversity

One thing I have come to realize and appreciate about the film is just how naturally diverse the cast has become. Besides the family values at its core, diversity could very well be the key to its billion dollar draw in each and every time a Fast and the Furious film is released. Kudos Universal Studios, Kudos.

    Final thoughts

Overall, the film was great. Of course, it had several plot holes and some inconsistencies, but it gets the job done. It is what it is and nothing more. It's a popcorn flick that kicks off the summer blockbuster game into high gear.

If you go in expecting realism than this movie is not for you, sourpuss. In fact, steer clear and head for the nearest mental institute, because something is clearly wrong with you.

Fate of the Furious is a funfest intended to entertain and not win an Emmy's.

    Next Movie Review

Next up Guardians of the Galaxy 2, scheduled for release on May second.

Can Quill and team compete against the behemoth that is Fast and the Furious? We'll just have to wait and see.

Until then good luck Guardians, in this year’s first ultimate blockbuster showdown.

    Movie Score

Fate of the Furious scores an 8 out of 10 on the speedometer of awesomeness.

    Final Note

On a final note, I thought I would miss Paul Walker and Jordana Brewster, but the franchise still felt like it should, without the pair, a high octane and fun adventure. There were several shoutouts to the character of Bryan. One stuck out most which is sure to appease the fanbase.
