Ross Mathews Asks People, 'Shopping Spree Or Trip To Paris?'

Jay Leno's former intern, Ross Mathews, has been walking through Santa Monica, California asking Americans if they prefer cashback or miles rewards on their credit card purchases.

Ross Mathews, the 36-year-old bestselling author and talk show host of Hollywood Today Live, is moderating a social media campaign for Capital One to see what consumers want out of their card reward programs. Results from his interviews will be posted on his social media channels, as well as, those of Capital One.

    Cashback or miles?

"What would you rather choose, a shopping spree or a trip to Paris?" says Mathews in a recent interview. "It's summertime and everyone has a choice of getting cashback or miles."

What he's referring to is Capital One's sweepstakes that lets consumers choose between #TeamQuicksilver, a card that features a flat 1.5% earn rate, and #TeamVenture, which features double miles for each purchase. Through June 27, participants can combine either of the above hashtags with #sweepstakes for a chance to win $10,000.

    Ross the intern

So what keeps the former regular of Tonight Show and Chelsea Lately occupied these days? "In June, I'll be busy with the survey and sweepstakes. I also have Hollywood Today and podcast to work on," says Mathews. "And I'll be traveling a lot this summer, such as to Palm Springs and Cabo San Lucas."

So does that mean he'd rather go to Paris than have a shopping spree? As for his preferences, Mathews maintains that he's a neutral moderator. (He has over half a million followers on Twitter.) Ross Mathews has been forthcoming about his struggle to make it in the media business, ever since he was affectionately known in the early 2000s as "Ross the intern" on Jay Leno's The Tonight Show. During that time, he admitted to being financially broke despite his growing popularity, per an interview with The Huffington Post.

"To make it in Hollywood, you have to embrace what makes you different, and you have to stand out in an authentic way," says Ross. "It's about having confidence. A lot of times, people ask themselves 'why me' when they should be asking themselves 'why not me'."
