So You Marched Today

Here are 7 things you can do to continue to defend the values we marched for all over the country.

1. Register to Vote

If you live in California, you can do it online.

Check if your state has an online voter registration option. Some states may allow you to start the online registration process but will mail you the form as they may require a signature with ink.

Bonus: Use Google Maps to place a “star” on the location of your polling place once you’ve typed in the address. You can find your polling place at http://yourfuckingpollingplace.com/

2. Play an Active Role in Your City

Whether it is an event like coffee with the mayor, job fair, city council meetings, open forums seeking public input on local issues, attend at least one! Get a sense of the political process in your city and meet your local officials whenever you can.

3. Election Season Isn’t Over

There are various municipal elections across the country for mayor, city council, and ballot measures. These are crucial to how your city will decide what funds will be cut, spent or collected. View your city’s website for details.

For example, Los Angeles County has an upcoming mayoral election on March 7, in addition to important measures like one aiming to combat homelessness with funding for health care, affordable housing, and job training.

4. Make Your Voice Heard

Call, email, and tweet your local representative about issues that concern or affect you! Whether it is the Affordable Care Act or pothole-ridden streets, it is the job of your representative to care for his or her constituents and resolve issues occurring in the community. Make sure they know.

Follow your local public works, police department, and representatives on social media for updates and to update them on any issues or concerns.

5. Become an Organizer!

As former President Barack Obama (cries) famously said: “Now is the time for some organizing.”

There are 652 days until the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, but you can do your part now by becoming a member of your state or local party or non-profit organization to rally a team of volunteers dedicated to your cause.

The Children’s Defense Fund and the ACLU are looking for organizers to hire.

6. Support Good Journalism

In the wake of fake news, citizens are in need of reporters and outlets that produce investigative reporting now more than ever.

7. Run for Something!

Yes, you! And if you don’t know how to begin, look to Run for Something, a newly launched organization by former Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama staffers, which will provide funds and staff for new leadership under 35 who want to run for something.

While it is in its early stages, donate to fund the races of young, progressive talent on the ballot for mayorships, state legislature, city council, and other decision-making posts.
