I Tried Rachel's Thanksgiving Trifle From "Friends" And It Was Pretty Awful

I hate myself.

If you like Friends, you know that Rachel was never much of a cook. You probably also remember the one time she tried to make an English trifle.

It didn't exactly go as planned.

I've always wondered what this monstrosity would taste like. Would it really taste like feet, as Ross claimed?

Or would the mix of several delicious ingredients lead to surprisingly good results?

So, driven both by curiosity and self-hatred, I decided to see for myself if it really was that bad.

For the recipe, I followed Rachel's description of the trifle in the show.

I made the custard from scratch.

Very important.

And I sautéed some beef with peas and onions.

The prospect of assembling all of these things together became increasingly terrifying. But, I had to finish what I had started.

So, with a heavy heart, I started putting together my trifle.

First, there was a layer of ladyfingers...

...then a layer of jam...

...then custard...

...raspberries...

...more ladyfingers...

...then beef, sautéed with peas and onions...

...a little bit more custard...

...bananas...

...and some whipped cream on top!

Et voilà!

It was then time to taste this masterpiece. And I was really looking forward to it!

The flavors were pretty mild and the first bite wasn't as bad as I expected. My mouth was just very confused.

The second bite was much harder.

Now, I have pretty high standards when it comes to food, so I wanted to get a second opinion on this trifle. I asked some coworkers if they wanted to try, and, surprisingly, many showed up.

Tanya thought it was "confusing but not bad." But she also said she was "a garbage person who will eat anything."

Steph thought it was a little bit like "a cheeseburger with candy in it."

Alp thought "a lot was happening" at first but that it wasn't so bad. Until, he got a spoonful of jam and beef, which was "not a good combo."

Finally, Kevin thought that "the texture was really weird but it tasted much better than it looked."

So, there you go! It was pretty fucking bad but also not the absolute worst.
