Parent Email, What is a Finsta?
Hello Parents,
We are excited to partner with you as your students go through middle school and high school, and experience the spectrum of events and emotions that come with that. We not only want to make ourselves available to the students, but to you as well! To better communicate with you, we will be sending out emails 1-2x per month to update you on current trends we see in our youth group, and resources that can be helpful in your adventure as the parents of teenagers (that job alone fits in with our current series in the main service- The Struggle is Real ).
Hot Topic- What is a “Finsta”?
There is a growing trend among teenagers on Instagram. Insta-users create a second profile, called a fake insta, or finsta, where they post pictures they wouldn’t post on their normal Instagram accounts. This is more popular with high schoolers but could certainly be encountered by middle schoolers as well. Some use these accounts innocently to post silly snapchat pictures of their friends making ugly faces, while others post things they wouldn’t want their normal followers to see, such as captions using colorful language or various content walking the line between appropriate and inappropriate. We love your kids and would hate for choices made on social media to have lasting consequences with their peers, friends, potential employers, etc. Mark Stichter, Public Information Officer with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, will be speaking on the realities and consequences of social media in Studio 22 on July 24th, but until then take time to pray about the best way to approach your student about finstas, if they have one, and what they think about them. Getting their thoughts on the subject is a great way to open up a conversation that will give you the chance to share your thoughts, and the fact that you love them and want the best for them! Even on Insta!

Article Alert-
Sticking with our theme of social media, this article offers great insight on the amount of time the average family spends using devices of all kinds. It’s pretty crazy! http://www.thesource4parents.com/ParentingHelp/parentinghelpdetail.aspx?ID=134
