Five Resources To Help You Succeed At UK Your Freshman Year

1. UK 101

UK 101 is a class, offered in the fall and the spring, about how to succeed at UK! You'll have a faculty member and an upperclass student teaching, so you'll get information from multiple perspectives. UK 101 covers a variety of topics, such as study strategies, financial wellness, how to get a job on campus, and even fun things to do in Lexington! It's a must-have course, especially if you're not familiar with Lexington or Kentucky.

2. Presentation U!

Hate writing papers or giving speeches? Then Presentation U! is for you. Commonly referred to as "Pres U!," this free tutoring center helps undergraduate students with anything from speeches to papers to presentations. They'll even help you with a resume or cover letter. They are located in the Hub of the William T. Young library or in the engineering complex (eStudio). They take walk-in appointments Monday - Friday. Definitely check them out the next time you need to give a presentation!

3. The Study

The Study is a go-to resource for all of your math and science needs. They offer free peer tutoring in most lower-leveled math and science courses (they even tutor a few other popular classes, such as Logic and Economics). Located in the Honors dorm on south campus and beside Common Grounds on north campus, the Study is easily accessible to all students.

4. The Writing Center

Want to ensure that your papers are error free? The Writing Center is just the place! English majors will look over your writing to ensure that it is technically and grammatically correct. The difference between the Writing Center and Presentation U! is that the Writing Center typically focuses more on technical issues, while Presentation U! looks at your paper as a whole, to ensure it makes sense and reads well. An extra set of eyes on your work never hurts!

5. MoneyCATS

We all know how difficult it can be to balance your everyday living expenses, while still treating yourself from time to time while you're in college. There's no need to be afraid of looking at your checking account balance, though! MoneyCATS can help you budget your finances. As current undergraduate students, they know the struggles of how expensive everything is when you're in school. They're a great source of support and advice when it comes to money.
