How To Conquer College

Here I will give you all you need to know about conquering college and give you some great advice from the almighty Sun Tzu.

1. Choose Your Classes Wisely

Try your best to not take all your major classes in one semester or you will be defeated and overwhelmed. Spread the classes out and take some fun/easy gen eds to break it up. Just as Sun Tzu said, "A general who listens to my principles, and applies them, will surely be victorious; keep him. A general who does not listen to my principles, and does not apply them, will surely be defeated; remove him"(Art of War 01.10).

2. Make Sure To Study Or You Will End In Defeat

Always make sure to study before a test even if you think it'll be a "breeze." Most of the time the tests that you think will be very easy are the ones that trip you up the most! Like Sun Tzu said, "Many calculations mean victory; few calculations mean no victory; then how much worse when there are no calculations? From this perspective I can clearly predict victory or defeat"(Art of War 01.19).

3. Make Sure You Don't Spend All Your Money In the Beginning Of The Semester

Try your best not to spend all your money right off the bat, in the beginning of the semester. I have learned from past mistakes to allow yourself only a certain amount of money each week to make it last. There is nothing worse than being completely broke 4 weeks into the semester and not being able to afford anyhting. Like Sun Tzu said, "When goods are expensive, the citizens' wealth will be exhausted. When their wealth is exhausted, the peasantry will be afflicted with increased taxes"(Art of War 02.13).

4. Make Sure To Stay Organized

There is nothing worse than walking into a class and realizing you didn't study for the test or do the homework assignment. I found the best thing to do is keep a planner and right down all due dates and test dates ahead of time so I don't miss anything. Like Sun Tzu said, "One who is prepared and waits for the unprepared will be victorious..."(Art of War 03.21).

5. Try Not To Pull All-Nighters All The Time

It is inevitable that some all-nighters will be needed, but try your hardest not to pull them all the time. Sitting through some classes are already hard enough and having a lack of sleep will make it that much harder. Like Sun Tzu said, "There is nothing more difficult than armed struggle"(Art of War 07.02).

6. Keep Calm Even When You Think The World Is Ending

You will have mental breakdowns--it is inevitable--but have no fear you WILL get through it. Like Sun Tzu said, "Even in the midst of the turbulence of battle, the fighting seemingly chaotic, they are not confused. Even in the midst of the turmoil of battle, the troops seemingly going around in circles, they cannot be defeated"(Art of War 05.11).

7. Roll With The Punches

You'll get knocked down a few times, but just get right back up and learn from it. Not everything will go in your favor, but that's just the reality of growing up and it will get better. Like Sun Tzu said, "Therefore, those skilled in warfare establish positions that make them invincible and do not miss opportunities to attack the enemy"(Art of War 04.11).

8. Make Time To Go Out And Hang With Your Friends

You'll be stressed out and will be in need of a break so take advantage of your weekends! Definitely make sure you make time to be around your friends on the weekend or whenever you have free time...it will help with being stressed trust me. Like Sun Tzu said, "…Unite with your allies on intersecting ground…"(Art of War 08.02).

9. Go To The Tech Or Tutoring Center For Help

Always try and make time to go to the Tech or the Tutoring center when you get the chance. It definitely helps when studying and doing lots of homework, even if you don't think it will. Like Sun Tzu said, "Due to common and uncommon maneuvers, an army can withstand the enemy's attack and not be defeated"(Art of War 05.02).

10. Be Nice To Teachers--They Will Help You

Always try and have a good relationship with your teachers. They are the ones giving you your grades and in the long run it is always good to make yourself known and that you like their class. And definitely go and ask for help when needed! Not all, but most teachers will take that into consideration when you need a small boost in your grade. Like Sun Tzu said, "...the general who does not advance to seek glory, or does not withdraw to avoid punishment, but cares for only the people's security and promotes the people's interests, is the nation's treasure"(Art of War 10.19).
