The "Charmed" Reboot Just Addressed The Backlash At San Diego Comic-Con

The Power of Three are back.

Charmed, the cult classic that gave us the Halliwell sisters, is set for a new reboot which has come under a lot of criticism since the plans for it were announced.

Holly Marie Combs, who played Piper in the original series of Charmed, has been very outspoken regarding the series.

Here’s the thing. Until you ask us to rewrite it like Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalizing on our hard work. Charmed belongs to the 4 of us, our vast amount of writers, crews and predominantly the fans. FYI you will not fool them by owning a title/stamp. So bye.

Combs and many fans have spoken out against the exclusion of any of the original cast and crew being involved in the reboot.

Nonetheless, the reboot has continued and is due to premiere in October – the perfect time for some witchy hi-jinx. The pilot also had its first official screening yesterday at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Despite the initial backlash when the show was announced, people have responded pretty positively to the reboot which is great news!

There are so many positive reviews from people who screened the pilot at Comic-Con I’m so proud!! #Charmed @sarahmjeffery3 @Melonie_Diaz @missmads @JennieUrman

Speaking at the panel, the creators of the reboot emphasised how they vow to honour the original, and that the show won't forget its roots, which is good news for a lot of fans of the original series.

Jennie Urman says that this Charmed reboot is “deeply rooted in the original”

Although, there has been some criticism that the show is promoting something that the original already did perfectly.

I understand people at comic con enjoyed the premiere, I understand it’s supposed to be about strong women and girl power and shit like that(Like Classic #Charmed wasn’t...🙄) but it all comes down to... why the fuck couldn’t they create their own witch show?

However, the creators have highlighted that what the original did so well, is what the world needs right now in the current political climate and that's part of the reason why they've rebooted Charmed.

Creator Jennie Snyder Urman on why now was the perfect time to reboot #Charmed: “The original was about female empowerment and sisterhood, and that’s what we need right now. We need to show women kicking ass.” #SDCC

It was also mentioned how the new series will have a definite 2018 edge – the pilot alone tackles issues such as sexuality, sexual harassment, sexism and much more.

One of the main sisters is queer, and Jennie Urman is talking about learning from Jane the Virgin the importance and impact of seeing yourself onscreen in a significant way

With the new take on the classic, I can't wait to see how it goes. Roll on October!
