5 Rachel Bloom Songs You’ll Love If You Watch “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”

Rachel Bloom's "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" has won a Golden Globe thanks to its biting satire and hilarious songs. What some people may not know is Rachel has been making songs with the same wit and bite for years. These are the five most raunchy and hilarious songs her back catalog has to offer. Warning: These songs were not made for TV and they're often more mature than her "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" songs.

    1. Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury

I think this song was a lot of people’s first introduction to Bloom and it had to be on this list. It’s loaded with literary references and if that’s not your thing, there’s still the humor of the unexpected. I think part of the genius of this song is the subversion of the school-girl trope: this isn’t a girl getting tricked into being ‘bad’. She’s a nerd who knows what she wants and what she wants happens to be National Medal of Arts Winner Ray Bradbury.

    2. I Steal Pets

This song works best when you put it in context. It came out a couple months after Rebecca Black’s “Friday” went viral. It almost seems sweet and childlike for the first few seconds, but of course, there’s a twist. It pairs the over-produced pop sensibilities of the widely ridiculed Ark Music Factory videos with Bloom’s twisted humor. While it parodies the videos, it manages to do it without making fun of the children in them, something many people failed to do at the time.

    3. The Cake Farts Song

This song gives a little look into Rachel Bloom’s process in the intro. It makes sense. Comedy is how she deals with something she does not understand and that is honestly good advice. Sometimes good humor is just running with the absurd and this song does a great job of that. Every twist gets crazier and oddly the message is pretty good: just do you, even if doing you means farting on a cake.

    4. Pictures of Your Dick

I was going through a breakup when I first saw this music video and I found it oddly cathartic. Getting dumped is awful and sometimes listening to sad ballads makes it worse. This song is hilarious and has that plot twist that makes Bloom’s songs so great. Of all these songs, this one reminds me the most thematically of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and you could see how the show could evolve from these ideas.

    5. You Can Touch My Boobies

Bloom really nails the fantasy of someone who doesn’t quite know how sex works. It plays with dream logic in realistic and hilarious ways. The topic matter pushes the limits in the way a lot of her best work does.
