1. The Nicest People In The World

This is hands-down the nicest country I've ever been to. From market vendors to personal guides to random people on the street, everyone wants to help you in The Gambia. And you'll definitely need it. The city streets are a hodgepodge of veering transport vans and sometimes even finding electricity can be hard. But never fear, because there is always someone here to talk to. Also someone to invite you for tea. And dinner. And maybe to spend a week or so in their compound learning Wolof. While you don't have to take everyone up on their offers, they are an important part of Gambian culture and make for a great story later.

2. See Real-Live Religious And Racial Tolerance In Action

There are eight different tribes in this small country with a population of just under two million, and ten languages spoken (Though the official one is English). However, you can find these tribes coexisting peacefully with each other, which sure is an awesome sight to see. They inter-trade and even intermarry. The two main religions, Christianity and Islam, have each retained roots based in traditional tribal religions and get along quite wonderfully living in the same villages. Nothing quite warms the heart more than seeing people love one another, and this country is great at that.

3. Experience Living Without Restrictions Imposed By Constant Access

This one may seem to be a bit of a paradox. How can constant access to internet and social media restrict us? The answer is by limiting our social interactions, which are the number one most important thing in The Gambia! You'll be able to focus on what is here and now--a beautiful nation of people from whom you can learn and grow--without being distracted by snapchats and news feeds. Give it a try, what you might find will surprise you.

4. Best Night Swimming In The World

The Gambia River is one of the most beautiful in Africa. Undisturbed by too much trade or boats, it is pristine and perfect for swimming. Make sure to go in the saltwater part where there are no hippos (I recommend going in the town of Lamin down by the Lodge). Going at night is an added plus. There is a large number of flourescent plankton swimming here with you, which makes it seem as if you're floating in a universe made entirely of glowing green stars. You may also hear the low bellow of the manatee resounding off the bottom. Definately worth the trip!

5. Music And Dance

Music and dance are instrinsic to all African cultures, and those residing in the Gambia are no different! Try to catch a live concert in Serakunda by any number of reggae artists which thrive here, or go upriver and visit a traditional drum circle! If you are lucky enough to get invited to a naming ceremony, which is quite likely given where you are make sure you go. Its one of the best Gambian parties out there, and the food is usually great too!

6. The Food

Try the Domoda, a traditional thick and spicy stew made from peanut butter, vegetables and bits of heaven. It's always served over rice (everything is always served over rice) and sometimes has chicken, lamb or fish in it. If sweets are your thing, hot donuts are sold every day in the streets of all cities and most villages. Dont forget to try the Julbrew, Gambia's own home-brewed beer. It's heaven on a hot day!

7. You'll Get A Unique Experience

If a cookie-cutter vacation in a tourist resort isn't for you, The Gambia may be. The reason you haven't heard about this country is because it's underdeveloped--but thats no reason to be afraid. Gambians live there every day! Going there is an opportunity to put yourself in someone else's shoes and live a lifestyle very different from the norm of electricity and internet. It takes a little getting used to, but don't be surprised if you end up loving it and never wanting to leave.
