American Flag Catches Fire At Atlanta Braves' Home Opener

O'er the land of the free, and Turner Field, the home of the Braves.

At last night's home opener vs the Mets, an errant firework appeared to engulf the American flag in flames.

Braves Spokesperson Beth Marshall told 11Alive News it happened because of new pyrotechnics. For the first time, they put pyrotechnics on Braves Vision (that's the large HD screen). One of the pyrotechnics flew at the flag and lit it on fire. Marshall said the material of the flag is flame retardant, so it went out on its own.

From another angle, we can see the flag was not fully engulfed in flames.

The flag does appear to be in flames as the fireworks are rising...

But a couple seconds later we see the smoke trailing away and the flag appears to be fine.

However, another photo uploaded last night showed signs of damage to the flag.

The fireworks at the @Braves home opener just burned holes in the American flag. Can we please plan better next time?

The flag is being replaced today.
