Ten Tips For A Stress-Free Graduation

Whether it's tripping, ties or tickets you're worried about, we've got you covered on graduation day.

1. Safety Pins And Ties Are Crucial

Use safety pins to your hood without showing the pins (Essentials will be able to help you our there). Wearing a suit? Don't forget a tie - that’s the thing that keeps your hood on without showing the hook (and you can’t go wrong with a UoL tie from GEAR).

2. Speaking of GEAR...

...have a final check for uni memorabilia whilst your parents are in a giving mood.

3. Worried about taking a trip?

If you're thinking of wearing 'difficult footwear', practice on some steps before making your final decision. And don’t worry too much - people trip every now and again, and it's really not a big deal.

4. Tickets first, then gown

Only the graduand (that's you!) is allowed in the queue for both of these. Also, remember your ID for ticket collection and receipt for gown collection.

5. Do Your Photo Research

Parkinson Steps and Clothworkers Court are traditional, but if you’ve spent your life in Common Ground have a couple of shots there too. There are also plenty of blank white walls in LUU (head for the quieter corridors to get away from the crowds).

6. Your Folks Will Want An Official Snap

Check out the official photo of you accepting your degree after your ceremony in the foyer. You’ll be snapped on the stage of the Great Hall, but you can see a print before you decide whether to buy it.

7. Appeals

If you're considering appealing your degree classification you can't graduate in July. Pop and see the Student Advice team for help with the appeals process.

8. Don't Sweat It - Literally...

Wear light clothes under your gown and make sure you eat and drink enough - it gets very hot and fainting is definitely worse than tripping.

9. Ditch Your Stuff

Keep your essentials in a small bag and leave it with your guests when you leave the union for the Great Hall (and don’t forget to switch off your phone before you hand it over). Arrange a spot to meet up after the ceremony (but not immediately outside the Great Hall, that’s where everyone else will be).
